| Mr. Murphy strikes again
Brent replacing the AP | Shelter | Inside shelter - not much there, bu tit's a mess from ripping stuff apart | | |
Nothing ever happens when it is say a nice calm 75 degree day.. Nope never.. It waits until we have sleet.. Suddenly at 9am this morning one of our towers went offline. No real storms in the area only a sudden cold snap. I drove out there and could get an ethernet link, but no IP traffic nor any signal from the AP So I drive back to the office and setup a new AP for the site and get Brent to climb the tower. We get back there and just as we replace the AP (old AP was an rb230 with 2 engenius pcmcia cards, new ap is an rb433 with 2 xr2's turned down to 26db) it starts sleeting. On top of that we can't get an ethernet link. I replace the power supply and re-crimp another rj45 and he replaces the rj45 on top, still no joy. We pulled up a temp Ethernet cable to get service restored and to get him off the tower asap. No sooner than he got off the tower and it really started coming down..
Not sure what has happened, but the RB230 wont power up via POE and the ethernet cable on the tower is apparently bad. I'm assuming something in the cable went bad and burned up the RB which will still power up via the power socket just not POE. |

| That sucks bigtime!
I've tried not to piss Murphy off too much this year. So far it's working for me so it means he's packing a good one for just the right day.
DOH! I'm gonna hex it by saying this... Pretty much the only burnt/failed equipment I've had to deal with from core/distro level of the network (Not CPE) is a single XR5 radio card that fried itself for no good reason. 5 minute swap and everything was up and running smoothly. (I'm really gonna screw it by saying this one) That's the only radio card or equipment failure we've had at this level this year (Past year, not the 5 days of this year lol) -- Justin - DSLR resident grouch and Mr Negativity TSI Fanboy - "Dontchya wish your 'net was hot like mine! | That totally sucks.
Last week I had a backhaul poop out. I found water in the cable, in the protector, and a burnt RJ plug on the protected side of the protector. Removed the protector, re-crimped everything and tried again but no go. Hopefully the ETH on the radio is still good, otherwise I'll be in your same position.
Funny thing is Murphey decided to visit me too. I had the redundant path on the remote end out of service for repair. I got the site back up through one of the AP's. Remember to check the PoE unit too - some fail over time due to intermittent shorts as created by ice/water. Also use a CAT5 tester to see if cable was really damaged since it could be just the connector. |

| reply to AMD Phreak Murphy got me that way one time as well, had the redundant path out of service due to water in a cable and the main link went out a day later.. bleh! I don't mind the ocassional issues, but do it when it's nice out Lol!
EMC_guy: Yep, I tried those to no avail. The RB230 accepts 20v-50v so I tried 3 different PSU's from 24v to 48v and a couple of different injectors. We replaced the ends (a couple of times) but no go.. I really do need to get a decent cheap cable tester, it probably would have saved time diagnosing the cable rather than me calling up 'Hey, you got power now?'
I have the board here and everything if fine except for it powering up via poe, if I power it up through the standard jack it works fine.. |

| I've used this tester for 5+ years now and it works very well. I dont think it will do all of the tests that a more expensive fluke will do, but it works for me just fine.
