NIS 2009 Will Not Open Smart Firewall

Hi All,

I have been having a problem with 2009 Smart? Firewall error messages when I boot up. I up graded to 2009 a month ago after giving in to the Norton popup window urging me to do so. I had been reluctant to upgrade because I felt I should leave well enough alone. I should have listened to my gut.

After upgrading to 2009 It ran great for about a week. Then it did not run Smart firewall on boot up. I followed the prompts to uninstall and reinstall Norton. It ran fine....for two days. Next time this happened I just rebooted without the uninstall and reinstall procedure. It opened ok....for three days.

Next time it happened I uninstalled and reinstalled, and as before it was ok for a few days.

Next time it happened I called support. They said they never heard of that problem before. She must have started working there that morning! She was very nice and helpful. All she could offer was to uninstall and reinstall back to an earlier version.

That was a day ago and it seems fine. I don't expect to have a problem with the earlier version, never had before.

I have a basic, stock Compaq Presario PC running xp. I haven't had problems with any other software but this one. I hope Norton can fix this glitch before I renew. I've used Norton for years, but will not stick with them if I can't use their latest product.

Thanks,

Sid

Have you tried posting your issue in this forum?

If not do so, they will have an answer of some sort for sure.

EDIT: Never mind I see you already have.

I see you have posted to an existing thread on the Norton forums, where there have been no solutions found so far. Are you seeing any other things out of the ordinary such as system slowdowns or hiccups that you can't explain? If so, it might not hurt to run through the steps here »Security Cleanup to rule out malware disabling the firewall.

I would like to do a registry scan. When I googled for that I got so many hits I don't know what to trust. I have seen "Svchost.exe is not responding" once every couple months at shut down. Also while running Microgrfax Picture publisher I am told it needs to shut down while I am working.

Thanks

You mentioned Windows Defender as being installed as well?
This most likely is at the root of your troubles
Uninstall WindowsDefender or disable it from running automatically before you do any further troubleshooting.

Although it is not installed on any of my XP machines, it was automatically disabled on Vista installs with NIS2009 products and older.

If a reboot after disabling or uninstalling WindowsDefender does not solve the problem, reinstall AFTER you have disabled or uninstalled Windows Defender.

Please report back what happens after you either disable or uninstall Windows Defender and reboot.

Or would you like to further info?

edit to add Check the Status of your Security Center in the Control Panel and check to see if any other AV or the like products are installed and post what the status of you AV and Firewall are in the applet.

I see you have updated posts in the topic posted over at Norton »community.norton.com/norton/boar···g&page=1

You should start a new topic over there if you need personal attention rather than adding to another posters topic.

I have notified Symantec about your posts both here and over at their forums.

Just FYI: If you are using NIS the Windows Firewall should BE OFF. NIS2009 will automatically turn it off when it is installed unless it has been unsuccessfully installed.
Windows Defender may have corrupted your install. You should have uninstalled or stopped it from running when you installed your previous and current NIS versions - it prevents the changes to your system by NIS if is running on install and rebooting after install.

For more info if you need it let me know.

If you are going to continue with the topic posted over at the Norton forums let us know so we can close this topic here to prevent cross posting.

I have been able to boot up 4 times without any problem from NIS 2009. This is done with Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing turned off. Is it safe to run with that turned off?

I just wanted to give you the latest update. I'll stop posting on both boards. I didn't realize that they were that closely related. I was just looking for a different perspective seeing that no one hade come up with a fix at the Norton site.

Thanks for all your time and help.

Using NIS2009 you do NOT need nor is it recommended to use another firewall when NIS is operational. Using 2 firewalls is NOT recommended by MS nor do you need the MS firewall as NIS includes firewall protection.
NIS when installed automatically turns OFF the Windows firewall for that very reason.

The Windows Security center in XP SHOULD list just the NIS firewall as active and show the WinXP firewall disabled when NIS is properly installed and all features are enabled.

Check to make sure that you are only running one firewall and let me know what Windows shows as the active firewall.

The two boards are in no way related. You are welcome to post in as many boards as you want, outside DSLR, to get different perspectives.

The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing was left on automawic after instaling NIS 2009. Maybe this is the "bug" if NIS 2009 should be turning it off on on install

Windows Defender may have stopped NIS from disabling the Windows Firewall during the install. WDefender also prohibits registry changes required for install to cleanly complete.
