[trouble] Problem with Broadband Limit - Need help

My sister and I both have broadband internet from Verizon. Recently she was billed $190 for exceeding her bandwidth limit. However, she couldn’t figure out how she could have exceeded it. We both have the same plan. She is the only person using her broadband, and mine is shared among several of my family members. I should also add that she never downloads anything, (no music, no software, or anything,) while I on the other hand download music and software all the time. Yet her broadband usage shows up as being immensely greater than mine. In the time she was connected for 20 minutes she received as many bytes as I had in an hour and 40 minutes – she had only checked her email in this time, while I on the other hand had downloaded several things during my session. Does anyone have any idea as why this could be? She doesn’t have wireless set up, so no one could be sapping her wireless, and sharing is disabled on her computer. Any information about what might cause this problem would be greatly appreciated.

my first instinct is spyware or malware of some sort. have your sister bring up the windows task manager, (usually ctrl+alt+del, or right click the task bar), and with no programs open, with the computer apparently doing nothing, check how many processes are running and what the cpu usage is. if the PC's basically idle the cpu usage should vary between 0 and a few percent, if it's considerably higher then something is amis. she should probably do a complete system scan with a good anti-virus program and a complete system scan with a good anti-spyware program - (I highly recommend Superantispyware.com for this - it's free and works quite well).

Since when does Verizon have a bandwidth limit?

I used to download 24/7 from newsgroups, for literally months at a time, and I never got a notice nor a bill for any sort of bandwidth overages. This on 3.0Mbit/sec DSL.

Do you have cellular broadband?
