| [ Extreme] Rogers DNS lookup problems
I have 6 computers in a downtown Toronto office that has suddenly been having DNS lookup problems with 3 of the computers, all running Vista. The unaffected 3 are all running XP. Repairing the network connection on the Vista boxes resolves the problem briefly as does a reboot but in either case the Vista machines soon drop Internet access. During the whole time, the XP boxes never drop Internet access.
The DNS in question is: 64.71.255.198
The Router is a Linksys RVS4000 running Firmware 1.2.10
Has anyone ever come across a situation like this???
Thanks in advance. |

| I am not sure using a mix of Roger's dns servers and others will achieve the effect you hope for... I suppose it might depend on the router firmware and how it routes dns outbound queries, but if (for example) the Rogers dns servers answer quicker than OpenDNS (since they are "closer" from a network point of view) you might get your results from the Rogers servers too often.
Most of the users of this forum seem to think Rogers dns servers are either broken or incorrectly configured or overloaded or some combination of all those...
OpenDNS has had complaints too - redirecting lookups etc.
It might be better to exclusively use Level3's apparently-public dns servers at 4.2.2.1 through .6 (at least) - by putting those IP addresses in your router config and making sure all machines behind the router specify getting dns from the router (that is, dont override the router dns settings with local ones unless that is really what you want for a specific client machine) |

Curious about this - could you provide more details? |

| Basically if you type in a URL that doesn't exist then OpenDNS redirects you to an in-house site with its own adverts, thus making them money. I don't think it interferes with regular internet usage unless you hate their redirect screens, for some reason. (check OpenDNS on wikipedia for more accurate details.)
To OP: Another alternative to OpenDNS is to use a university DNS server (see »forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic···#1389516). |
