Bergen Co | SLR review of the Tamron 18-270mm Looks really good for someone looking for an all around vacation lens. If the new internal AF motors on the new Tamron's worked better and faster on Nikon bodies I would add a Tamron lens to my line-up. But on nikon's they're too slow for my taste.

West Milford, NJ | It seems all of these mega-zoom lenses whether SDM/HSM etc or screw-drive are all fairly slow. I haven't seen one from nikon, Canon, Pentax, or any third party mega-zoom like this that is fast - Does Nikon even make anything with that much throw? |

It seems impossible to maintain a sharp image across the large focal range with a relatively large aperture with these super-zooms. They have to be stopped down to f8-22.
Because of this these lenses don't interest me. |

No but on the Nikon's if you compare the same lens like the Tamron 17-50 2.8 VS the new version of the Tamron 17-50 2.8 with the internal motor, the old screw drive versions focuses faster. That's a fact. In fact I wished I had purchase one of the old version before it was replace by the one with the AF motors.
Nikon makes an 18-200VR lens. But I'm not interested in purchasing any of these lenses. But I would buy a Tamron 17-50 or a 28-75 if I could still get the old version brand new. |

Gugarci - I wonder why the Nikon screw-drive is faster at AF than the internal AF motors. That's really strange. I can only compare my system in which if I switch my DA* 300 f4 to screw-drive from SDM, the screw-drive is slower. As soon as I switch to SDM, the lens is considerably faster to AF. |

Don't know but it's well documented on Nikon forums by users. Also when I first got my D80 I played around with a Tamron 17-50 and it snapped into focus quickly.
When the new ones came out and I was looking to buy another lens I tried at Adorama a couple of new Tamron 17-50's and the focus felt slow and the motor made some weird clicking sounds.
Tamron's have great optics. But the AF motor on the Nikon's is slow and makes really cheap sounding noises. That's too bad. Hopefully some of the new upcoming Tamron lenses will uses a new an improve AF motor. |

1 edit | Well, weird clicking sounds does not sound good at all! And I wonder where a clicking sound would come from since there was no mechanical connection between the camera and the AF motor. Strange indeed. I wonder if Tamron hasn't already addressed the issue? Have they been accepting returns for it? |

2 edits | I have the 28-300 VC Tamron (Nikon mount). Supposedly it's FF compatible. Bought it new back at the beginning of September and used it for maybe a few hundred pictures. I'm looking to sell it though since I really don't have a need for a do-it-all walk around lens. The only picture I uploaded to the gallery which I took with it is the hawk eating the squirrel. |

I noticed very slight to no vignetting on my lens. I did end up returning it, though, as the AF speed was way too slow.
