Re: Sign up at Astraweb now to pay $11/month for LIFE!

Whoa looks like Astraweb is taking the fight with Giganews! There now at 403 days retention. Will be interesting to see if retention at Astraweb will keep on rising like at Giganews. There only 9 days behind
»secure.giganews.com/signup/ If Giganews is going to compete, they need to lower their prices. 50 connections is pointless when you can max out your speed on 10 or less. They should have unlimited accounts with less connections for around the same amount Astraweb and Usenetserver charge instead of putting caps on the lower prices.

I agree but do you really think Giganews is prepared to lower their prices quite yet? Don't think so. The only way I see it happening is if they really start hurting and people leave in droves.

Oh yeah one thing that would really help Giganews a little would to offer their SSL for free instead of charge for it. No other newsgroup provider charges for SSL. In my opinion this really hurts Giganews.

I just downloaded a DVD from Astraweb that is 413 days old, no problem. A few blocks missing, but nothing PARs couldn't handle. That's great! If only Newzbin could increase their own retention. In the meantime, thank you nzbs.org.

I downloaded 3 more DVDs of the same age, and no problem at all either. Astraweb really tightened up compared to a year ago when they constantly had huge chunks of missing blocks in posts that were not even 100 days old while claiming 200 days retention.

Does Astraweb have any special prices/deals/sales for those Pay-by-Download plans or ever had any?

Lol I got to wait until next year before my 2 year plan ends. They never went passed 200 days, but I am paying $8 a month with 20 connections. So it isn't that bad considering the price I am paying. Now since their priced increased it costs $15 a month. I will for sure be going to Astraweb.

I'm not aware of any discounts off Astraweb pay-by-download (block) plans. The price is good though. The closest competitors are Blocknews with 200 GB for $25 and Usenet-News with 200 GB for $27.

Thanks. I never heard of those guys. Too bad Giganews doesn't do it too. My downloads aren't consistence. There are times I barely download a lot, and other times I go crazy (like over the past few weekends).

Yep but I have heard Giganews use to do block accounts.

Really? I haven't for the last few years. When was that?

Not sure the exact time but like 6 to 7 years ago I think. Not even sure if it is true.

Blocknews and usenetnow (monthly accts) are run by Swintec who is a member here at dslr. Can't get much better service than being able to private message the owner of the company you buy from.
