Good to hear, I suggest anyone on the west coast sign up for these guys as there server is quite fast and maxes out my 12mb connection, and anytime I post it immediatley appears. I really like this server and the community seems nice, I am new to usenet as well, but I read and learnt about it and now I am even posting stuff for people to download and not just being a leech. Usenet is like a forum/community and I like that.

Signed up a few days ago and I love it. Can't beat the price or the 270 days retention.

It's not at 270 yet. It's currently advertised as 200+

I've had Astraweb for about 6 months on the $11/mo special and would be hard pressed to say enough good things about them. By the way, they will give you a discount on Newzbin Pro, which IMO, has a much better search engine then Newsleecher, which I have also used. As for Astraweb's special, the good thing about this to remember is that you are not locked in. You haven't spent 100 bucks or more to get a good deal by incurring a one year committment, which you have to do with Newshosting or spend $19 plus a month. If Astraweb were to go to major loser category, hey no problem, out it goes. I like freedom, plus 200+ days retention and UNLIMITED, UNCAPPED downloads (this month, about 1.5 TB!)

Looks like a really good deal.

One question. It happens that some months my downloads are pretty high. I remember when I was with Newshosting that sometimes, download speeds would go down probably because of a cap. I have been the last 2 years with GN and never had that problem.

Are Astraweb downloads really unlimited? No caps?

Thanks
Doobie
Back when a.b.hdtv stuff was a big thing I got TBs of stuff - but never got any slowdowns (I'm with NH for many years now...)

I'm wondering if astraweb is having server issues, when I go to download something, all the files aren't showing up?

No issues that I have seen.

What is the retention exactly? 204 days, around there? Can you check a few groups?
Thanks!

Does anyone else has sporadic speeds with astraweb? I was on usenetserver which consistently provides 1+MByte/s download, however I decided to give astraweb a try because of longer retention and better pricing, and while they are mostly great they have speed issues sometimes. Yesterday I tried downloading from secure port and the speed fluctuated from 200KByte/s down to 40KByte/s. I did speed test on my line and it showed I didn't have any problems. I then switched to usenetserver and was able to download at 1MByte/s.

Does anyone else experience speed issues with astraweb?

Does your ISP throttle Usenet on all of the ports Astraweb offers access on? If not, disable SSL and you'll notice a significant increase in speed. My 10mbit connection is easily maxed out (~1.1MB/s) with 4 connections to Astraweb.

I really havent had any speed issues. You may want to try changing the ports to see if that makes a difference also, you may want to try a different newsreader. I used to ahve speed issues when I used Grabit, I then switched to NewsLeecher and havent had an issue since.

During the day I usually can pull 1.2-1.6MB Down. At night and very early AM I can pull 1.8-2.4MB down. I am currently using 10 connections. Remember that Astraweb reccomends between 6-8 connections for full speed.

They're not unique views. I've re-looked at this thread myself over five times now.

Doesn't matter, everybody (fonz and many others), copied this from one forum to another.

I've seen it on more than 6 different forums now. I'm sure Astraweb has gotten a lot of business from many different places now.

The real credit goes to kleverig for somehow engineering this deal, don't know why Astraweb decided to offer this, but its pretty great.

Well, I feel like I should drop my 2 cents in here, and say that I am extremely impressed by the speed I get when using Astrawebs servers. I'm still learning, but it was simple enough to get alt.binz up, configured and connected and downloading straight away.

My RR service w/ TWC is 7/2, and whenever I am downloading, I get a solid 830 kb/s (+/- 5kb/s). Simply amazing. Definitely recommend. If you've never used the newsgroups before, like myself, and kind of stayed away for whatever reason....go ahead and take the plunge...you'll be glad you did.

FOr those that are not aware yet...Astraweb has changed the naming of thier servers again:
»helpdesk.astraweb.com/index.php?···ewsid=19

Updated Server Connection Settings

We have updated our server connection settings to make things more consistent, and in particular, to allow some strict checking news reader clients* to work.
The old settings will eventually be phased out. You are advised to update your settings at the earliest convenience.

The new settings are:

General Servers (Non SSL) on ports 119, 23, 1818 or 8080:
- news.astraweb.com
- eu.news.astraweb.com (European servers)
- us.news.astraweb.com (U.S. servers)

Secure Servers (SSL) on ports 443 or 563.
- ssl.astraweb.com
- ssl-eu.astraweb.com (European servers)
- ssl-us.astraweb.com (U.S. servers)

If you should have any problems with these new settings, please contact Support for assistance.

* NZB-Omatic and NZB-Omatic-Plus was one of the news readers that did not work with our previous multi-field wildcard Common Name in our SSL certificate. It has now been verified to work properly.

Nice, thanks. I don't think I've gone to Astraweb's site for a *very* long time.
