| I can't believe I'm going to say this but I might actually leave Giganews (been a member for 2+ years). With Astraweb's growing retention and $11/month price, why should I stay with Giganews? Maybe to keep my Newsleecher subscription, but that isn't a big deal, I can just purchase the program as a standalone. |

| reply to fonzbear2000 Cheers to Astraweb! I wonder if they will keep the deal going as they get closer to 270 days retention. Either way it's a great deal for those that get in on it.

| reply to fonzbear2000 Its a good deal, but I recently experienced serious problems with their billing.
I was charged 4 times last month. The multiple charges appeared at the same time and knocked my account into the negative - I got 4 NSF fees as a result costing me over 100 dollars. Had my account not been overcharge i would not have had a single NSF fee. I've opened several tickets explaining what happened and have not heard a reply from Astraweb for over a week. Piss poor service IMO. |

| reply to brianiscool You must have gotten in when the exchange rate was good. 2 years is 260,00 = 344,55200 U.S. dollars plus a tad extra for SSL based on todays exchange. Unless you had a coupon? -- Block Accounts | UseNet Now |

That's a long commitment for a Usenet service. Service and retention can change for a provider quickly. Going for good to bad, ect. Currently GigaNews is having retention issues, which I'm sure they are going to fix sooner or later. Probably with a huge retention increase. My point is that that if a MAJOR usenet provider like GigaNews can have issues (going on two months now) other providers can have service/retention problems.
Not saying it was a bad decision, for the price you got I might have jumped on it. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable committing more then month to month. With the recent retention increase announcements from AstraWeb and NewsHosting, I wonder if anyone who is locked into a long term deal with other usenet providers are regretting it? -- Dr. Web 5.0 + SuperAntiSpyware Pro + Router/SPI |

With Astraweb's growing retention and $11/month price, why should I stay with Giganews? I made the $11/mo. leap to Astraweb four months ago from being with Giga 3+ years. I kept Giga for a month while trying Astraweb out. Other than a slight drop in download speeds and loss of 80 days retention I couldn't justify paying 3 times more for Giga. I've had zero issues with Astra and at $11 forever it's an unbeatable deal. SSL, 20 connections, no censorship. What more can you ask for. Should add that I never had a single issue with Giga--they were and are the best. I'm surprised to hear about the issues they are having, I was convinced they were immune |

"DSL" has nothing to do with the broadband service; Astraweb's plan means that you can download as much as you want (no bandwidth limits) and your speed to their servers can go as far your connection speed goes. |

3 edits | Ahh...ok, thanks guys.
I never got into usenet's. Was never able to find a reader that didn't make everything appear to be over complicated and never got the gumption to actually make it through the learning curve.
Maybe I'll have another go at it.

| reply to fonzbear2000 Looks like a really good deal.
One question. It happens that some months my downloads are pretty high. I remember when I was with Newshosting that sometimes, download speeds would go down probably because of a cap. I have been the last 2 years with GN and never had that problem.
Are Astraweb downloads really unlimited? No caps?
Thanks Doobie |
