[Connectivity] RCN D.C. very slow internet?

I have been complaining to tech support for about a month about the terribly slow internet speeds I have been getting in the evening in the D.C. area.

As of right now I am getting the following:

File size transferred : 3.02 MB (3167484 bytes)
Total time taken : 12.79 seconds (12787 milliseconds)
Throughput : 247.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 0.25 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 1976.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 1.98 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

Can anyone else in the area comment on their speeds recently? Is it just me? Tech support obviously says it is, and the problem will be fixed in the next six hours, but this has been going on for over a month.

BadBandwidth

@rcn.com

Ive been experiencing the same problem here in DC. I pay for the 20 Mbs package and typically clock my bandwidth at 1Mbs to 8 Mbs on downloads. Im extremely pissed as i often dont have adequate bandwidth to stream video or game. Ive got a tech coming out to diagnose but i think this may be an infrastructure issue and i bought a service that RCN simply cannot provide.

Re: [Connectivity] RCN D.C. very slow internet?

Has anything happened with this that RCN can report? I am still getting the following evening speeds:

File size transferred : 3.02 MB (3167484 bytes)
Total time taken : 16.77 seconds (16771 milliseconds)
Throughput : 188.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 0.19 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 1504.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 1.5 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

Can RCN provide anything?

I am having the same problem with slow Internet service uploading and downloading. I'm not getting any help from RCN either. I am paying for the 10 Mbs package.

I am frustrated too!

I'm only pulling down about 5Mbps, and I have the 10Mbps service. This is unusual, as my download speeds are almost always close to 10Mbps, day or night.

I have MegaModem Mach 7, but my performance is not nearly 7Mbps. Here are my results using Flash 8 plugin tool:

download = 2379Kb/s
upload = 22Kb/s
latency = 1629ms

That is still better than my download results on 1/2/2009.
download = 1015Kb/s
upload = 60Kb/s
latency = 39ms

I may try to call support again, but they can rarely provide any information or solutions.

I called and checked on the status of my trouble ticket (the tech confirmed that it has been open since 11/16). I can provide the number to someone at RCN if it helps? I just have no idea anymore what to do.

Please advise

Hey guys. Check out the topic "1-Minute connection . . ."

Might help.

Yeah, I just wanted to add my corroboration to this thread. About a month ago our building was 'upgraded' to digital cable. I say upgraded because I still get MTV2, but nothing else.

At the same time, my 5mbps service dropped down to a consistent 500-580kbps. I'm a pretty easygoing guy, but frankly, it's caused a couple of hiccups that lead my equally bad vista machine to blow a gasket.

I'd change to comcast, but I can't really see that being any better.

I don't quite follow. Can you point me to the thread? Thanks!

This one--

»[Connectivity] 1-minute connection, 4-minutes no connection

Relates to fixing severe connectivity problems by changing the modem.

I don't know how things are for everyone else, but I'm back at optimal speeds this evening...

File size transferred : 3.02 MB (3167484 bytes)
Total time taken : 2.5 seconds (2500 milliseconds)
Throughput            : 1266.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
                      = 1.27 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
                      = 10128.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
                      = 10.13 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

As am I. However this is usually the case. The slowdown for me happens about 7:00pm and goes until 11:00pm

Yeah, now that I look at it, I'm only pulling 5.42 Mbps as of 7 PM.
