New 10 Meg pricing

Effective January 6th, 2009 the price of Embarq's 10M/896k service will be reduced by $10 for residentail customers. This means the regular ala carte price will be 54.95, and the discounted rate with a qualifying package will be 44.95 (which if you recall is what the price of 5M was a year ago). This change is to maintain competitive pricing in the market and drive higher sales of the service. This offer is available to new DSL customers and reactively to existing customers.

Automatically or do we have to ask?

Awesome. Any word on if they'll reduce prices for any other tiers?

Nothing else so far, but I'd like to see it happen. And yes, you do have to call. This is usually the case as with the DSL as an existing customer you are under contract and may be "price for life", and as such Embarq won't change your price unless you request it.

Thanks!

Just so people know, if you have only a landline and the HSI, the price drops from $65 to $55.
You need the phone-fluff package to drop the price further.

this is much needed IMHO, as the 10 meg package was a bit over-priced.

Also, what about the 5 meg package? is it still $49.95?

And what of the other packages?

In any event, this is very very tempting now...I may upgrade...

Only the 10M pricing changed today. I think this is great news for anyone that can get 10M! And yes, you do have to call to get the new pricing.

any rumors/word on/if the other packages' pricing will be cut in the future?

it just occurred to me...yes, I know they're cutting the price to remain competitive...but is there the possibility of a new speed tier emerging soon? It just seems rather odd that they're dropping the price all of a sudden.

*shrug* of course, maybe they really are doing it for the sole purpose of remaining competitive.

Either way, it's a nice drop. Just wish I could get those speeds at my location.

I am very tempted to make the switch to 10M, and get rid of TWC once and for all.

The only thing that has been holding me back are my ping times. They are a lot higher with Embarq. 32 ms to the first hop does not work well for online games. When my first hop on cable is 1 ms. I tried several months ago to switch to fast path, but my line would not sync correct it was like at 18Mbps one of the techs on here told me. I am wondering though since they upgraded my area to 10 M, and I can get 10 M, if that would change my line at all and I could go to fast path now. hmmm

When Lamont was still the official tech for this forum he advised me that 10M accounts default to fastpath (I asked him to check my account to verify). If this still holds true you would probably have a better ping time as well. I've never done a traceroute to verify what my ping times are myself, but I will try it when I get home today and see what it looks like.

My ping times are the same on 10 ASDL2+ as they were with fast path.

I was told also that the 10M plan defaults to fast path, but I can't find a way to 'see' that information using the previous Telnet commands:

EMBARQ> wan adsl chandata
DSL standard: ADSL2PLUS
near-end bit rate: 11773 kbps
far-end bit rate: 1023 kbps

Anyway, my first and second hop results to Embarq dot com are the same as when I was on 3.0 Fastpath (notebook -> wifi access point -> switch -> router):

traceroute to embarq.com (168.251.192.15), 64 hops max, 40 byte packets

That's a good result!

But what about Java tests? I can't break 9900 no matter time, place, or machine used.

What phone package do you need to get the $44.95 price for the 10Meg service? I qualify for the 10Meg service, but they still quote me (over the phone and website) $54.95 for 10Meg. I have phone service with caller id, voice mail, call waiting. I am in New Jersey.

if they're quoting you for $54.95 with phone service, then you're getting the $10 bundling discount....once you've established service, I'd say just call in and mention the new price structure for 10 meg--they'll then likely give you the $10 off that you want and you'll be paying $44.95 total.

Joey, fix the routing issues that Fort Walton Beach has and I'll switch. You bounce from Orlando to Atlanta. Not necessary.

Why we can't be bounced from Tampa is beyond me. But, I need low pings. I'm sticking with cable. (for now)

Thanks for the lower price. DSL is very 20'th cent. (speed wise) but, you don't offer the crap cable has, either which is a plus. I hope you will lower the other plans, too.
I'm not making a decision until I dial 611 and hear Century Tell.

That's most likely outside of Embarq's control and has everything to do with the carriers in play. In most cases, routing through Tampa would mean having to route through Dallas before you could reach east coast destinations. You can only move between carriers where they intersect, and those points of intersection only happen at a select few cities around the US.

Take a look at some network maps from the major carriers and you'll see how the pattern unfolds:

Agreed, check out the peering points of Level3 and SprintLink. They only meet every so often ( Sprint: »www.sprint.net/performance/ ) (Level3: »www.level3.com/downloads/Level_3···_map.pdf ) Quite a difference I have to admit. Once you cut out the fluff lines.

EDIT: Level3 says they have multiple routes through Kansas city. Yeah, a work in progress maybe? Only way out of KC is via KC to St. Louis at the moment.
