Effective January 6th, 2009 the price of Embarq's 10M/896k service will be reduced by $10 for residentail customers. This means the regular ala carte price will be 54.95, and the discounted rate with a qualifying package will be 44.95 (which if you recall is what the price of 5M was a year ago). This change is to maintain competitive pricing in the market and drive higher sales of the service. This offer is available to new DSL customers and reactively to existing customers. |

| Nothing else so far, but I'd like to see it happen. And yes, you do have to call. This is usually the case as with the DSL as an existing customer you are under contract and may be "price for life", and as such Embarq won't change your price unless you request it. |

Just so people know, if you have only a landline and the HSI, the price drops from $65 to $55.
You need the phone-fluff package to drop the price further.

|  this is much needed IMHO, as the 10 meg package was a bit over-priced.
Also, what about the 5 meg package? is it still $49.95?
And what of the other packages?
In any event, this is very very tempting now...I may upgrade...

it just occurred to me...yes, I know they're cutting the price to remain competitive...but is there the possibility of a new speed tier emerging soon? It just seems rather odd that they're dropping the price all of a sudden.
*shrug* of course, maybe they really are doing it for the sole purpose of remaining competitive.

The only thing that has been holding me back are my ping times. They are a lot higher with Embarq. 32 ms to the first hop does not work well for online games. When my first hop on cable is 1 ms. I tried several months ago to switch to fast path, but my line would not sync correct it was like at 18Mbps one of the techs on here told me. I am wondering though since they upgraded my area to 10 M, and I can get 10 M, if that would change my line at all and I could go to fast path now. hmmm |

| When Lamont was still the official tech for this forum he advised me that 10M accounts default to fastpath (I asked him to check my account to verify). If this still holds true you would probably have a better ping time as well. I've never done a traceroute to verify what my ping times are myself, but I will try it when I get home today and see what it looks like. |

My ping times are the same on 10 ASDL2+ as they were with fast path.
I was told also that the 10M plan defaults to fast path, but I can't find a way to 'see' that information using the previous Telnet commands:
EMBARQ> wan adsl chandata
DSL standard: ADSL2PLUS
near-end bit rate: 11773 kbps
far-end bit rate: 1023 kbps
Anyway, my first and second hop results to Embarq dot com are the same as when I was on 3.0 Fastpath (notebook -> wifi access point -> switch -> router):
