Looks like NetMeter which you can get here: »www.metal-machine.de/readerror/

You can also configure it however you like in terms of caps to warn you when you're approaching 250GB but be warned, this program only takes use on a single computer, not over all connected devices.

For that you'd want something like the Tomato Router firmware here: »www.polarcloud.com/tomato

My router is a WRT54Gv8 - I can't use tomato.

Thanks for the link though

EDIT: Crap. Doesn't work on Windows 7. Oh well. *shrugs*

You can still purchase the WRT54GL router. The L designates this model is still uses Linux for its firmware and it's basically just a rebuild of the original WRT54Gs that were based on Linux firmware.

It's $59.99 at Amazon which I realize is a lot, but the Tomato firmware is truly worth it. I can't live without it now and the TCP Vegas support they have recently added to the latest version of Tomato to aid with congestion avoidance and allow you to actually get something out of powerboost while still applying your QoS rules is truly awesome.

I second the notion of buying a WRT54GL or a WRTSL54GS and running Tomato on it. Seriously, it's one of the best firmwares available, and is *very* elegantly implemented. That's more than I can say for DD-WRT.

I would be quite wary of using TCP Vegas. Numerous studies have been done which show the downsides to using it, and based on those studies (yes, I have read them), I simply cannot justify using it:

http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/~ananth/1999-2001/Richard/IssuesInTCPVegas.pdf (PDF)

It solves a lot of congestion-related problems, and it's very good. But you need to be aware of the downsides/risks of using it. The biggest problem I have with it, and end-users should be made aware of this:

TCP Vegas makes the assumption that network re-routing doesn't happen, or if it does, happens quickly -- and when it doesn't, the implementation fails miserably. Internet reconvergence does not happen as quickly as TCP Vegas assumes; usually it takes 60-180 full seconds. Since network paths on the Internet change constantly (if you want evidence of how often, I'll point you to BGPlay, which will give you some indication of just how often reconvergence happens -- *very* often), I simply cannot risk using TCP Vegas.

Is the WRTSL54GS still available? I was thinking it would be nice to find one for the extra RAM that it has, but then maybe I'm wrong on that. Anyway, I thought Linksys no longer manufactures them and whenever i check eBay the bidding gets too out of hand to get one at a decent price.

Also, the WRT54GS is still available retail (even in the older V3.0 and even V2.0 configurations, which can use either Tomato or DD-WRT, another popular third-party frmware, and my own favorite). DD-WRT has most of the feature set of Tomato, and includes serveral features Tomato lacks (mostly because Tomato is focused on maintaining a small size). I was in Best Buy earlier this month, and actually saw a WRT54GS (in V3.0 trim, no less) on the shelf, still in the retail box (and I bought my own V2.0 GS from a different Best Buy in 2005).

Re: Bandwidth Monitors Again

DD-WRT looks confusing as hell to install... I've heard time and time again that Tomato is the way to go... so I might pick up a GL.

Re: Bandwidth Monitors Again

Hi, does anyone know if the cap is based on a rolling 30 day, monthly billing period or just based on a Jan, Feb, March, and so on type thing?

Mine was a freebie from a good friend.
Bought a brand new router, flashed it then shipped it to me.

Not hard from what I have read... Works great too!

I had a bad experience with DD WRT. Of course I was trying the full install version. I did get to flash, but the response time utterly sucked. Personally they try to pack too much into DD-WRT, though I know there are other versions or minimal installs.

The next time I tried to flash the router to a different build of DD-WRT (one that was not the full version) it wouldn't take no matter how much I tried.

I flashed that same router with Tomato many times as upgrades have come out and it's worked flawless since. Go with Tomato, a WRT54GL, and don't look back. You won't be sorry. Tomato is worth the investment in a WRT54GL.

DD-WRT is no harder to install than Tomato; I've installed both (in fact, on the same WRT54GS V 2.0 I've owned going into its fourth year), and I migrated *from* Tomato to DD-WRT, primarily due to one feature that DD-WRT has that Tomato lacks (support for the DynDNS service, which I use). If you can install *any* standard firmware for your Linksys router, you can install either Tomato or DD-WRT (or any other third-party firmware), as *all* install via pretty darn standardized *.bin files; the only exceptions are some (not all) of the newer routers which use customized firmware from Linksys parent Cisco Systems (I said *not all*, because the WRT-310N gigabit wireless-N router can use DD-WRT firmware, and the WRT-310N is not even a year old).

Re: Bandwidth Monitors Again

I ended up having to get the "Bandwidth Monitor" program... That one wasn't pulling data from Windows 7.

I gotta tell ya... its awesome seeing 16.73Mbps sustained downloads. Never thought I'd see the day.

Anyway, now I gotta find stuff I really want so I can push the cap.
