| reply to R11 Re: 15 meter of cable to much ?
Yes and no. Your phone cable is measured in kilometers when you consider how far it is between your house and the xSLAM.
15 meters of low quality cable, however, is going to ruin your signal. I expect since you bought it at The Source, it probably isn't good quality (even if it is marked as such). They are usually known as purveyors of overpriced merchandise.
I personally have a 50 foot run to my modem and have very good stats and a 6 mbit connection to boot. The reason it works fine is because I am using CAT-5 cable punched down to BIX blocks at either end. CAT-3 is also perfectly fine, however, nowadays you won't see much savings by going with it. You'll probably not use BIX punchdown--an RJ11 connector at either end would be plenty. You can usually buy an RJ-11 crimp tool including a few ends for under $5 at your local surplus junk store (and they'll probably have some odds and ends of CAT-5 to sell you too).
One important thing to remember is that if you are going to run a long cable, you'll need to ensure there's no interference from the typical sources: Electrical wiring, heavy appliances (washing machines, dryers, furnaces, stoves, fridges, etc.), and fluorescent lights. CFLs included.
Or, you could just connect the modem with a short (6 foot or less) cheap and nasty phone cable (like the one that came with the modem) and run ethernet to your computer/router. It depends on what you prefer. Myself, I wanted the modem near the router because I have one UPS for the modem, router, and switch. And they're hanging from the basement rafters by pipe strapping. Someday, once I've cleaned up the rats nest a bit I'll post a pic. It looks dangerous... | | corkyy

2 edits | Well, While talking about cable...
The phone cable going from the outside demarc to the house seem to be wrong. I look at all the big black wire going to the other appartment and I found mine ( the small white one) to look cheep.
On the white wire, its written "strait cable", does it mean it's untwisted!?, And if yes, does this cable might create some noise on the line?
Thanks!
EDIT, I have about 15-20Meter of this cable to go to the first jack, I've disconect the 2 others jack from the first one, I'm not using them and they where adding another 5-10Meter cable. | |
