| [Info] Progree / regress report
I have refrained from posting, because it seemed that all I had was more bad news as time went along. And I am certainly not one to be bitching all the time about how bad off I am as long as there are so many people in Helix land and elsewhere, who are so much worse off than I am. Having said that the following:
You all know,I got diagnosed with lung cancer ( STOP SMOKING YOU ) in June of 2007. My right lung was surgically removed, and after a year and one half, I remain cancer free. That in itself is a miracle.
According to the surgeon, it was an extremely difficult surgery, what made it so, I have no Idea. I do know that the procedure took four hours longer than anticipated. And the recovery followed suite. One day in the ICU unit turned into one week in ICU etc. etc.
Recovery was slow or non existent, I was not responding to treatment, was not doing any physical therapy, coughing (OUCH) seemed to be the most important issue, I was not eating, etc. etc. One day the surgeon told my daughter Heidi that there was nothing more he or the hospital could do for me, and that she should take me home, make me comfortable and make funeral arrangements. So home I went.
There is only one person in Helix land with an inkling on what my daughter Heidi is all about. And believe you me, she was not going to settle for a funeral at this point in time.
Needless to say, she had me coughing before we even got home, coughing as painful as it is, was needed to clear the fluids from the lung created by the surgery. And them there was the rest of the PT. I started from not being able to roll over in bed to walking around the house, climbing the stairs driving the car,you name it. I even managed to split some fire wood and taught my son Eric how to use the chainsaw without cutting off his hand However, came a point in time, no one knows exactly when , that forward progress stopped. Not only did the forward progress stop, backward progress kicked in. It became more difficult to stay awake the whole day, got tired real fast, etc. etc. Leaves me at my current situation:
I have diabetes, neurapaty, (hurts like hell) a torn rotators cuff (Ditto)which can not be repaired as my lung surgeon told me that my remaining lung would not sustain another general anesthesia. I have a broken rib (Ditto), Plus I am currently suffering from bronchitis not much fun with only one lung, It seems to be one of those "resistant bugs" as I am on my third set of antibiotics without much improvement in the overall situation.
Even without the bronchitis, I am tired all the time and spend on the average of 20 hours a day sleeping, My wife wakes me up to take my pi ls and I am back asleep still sitting up with a milk glass in my hand. Right now I am having one of these "lucid," moments. So hence this post.
Keep up the good work. George.

| reply to georgequ Wow, George, you've gone through a lot! I'm so glad that you used one of your 'lucid moments' to drop by and let us about how you're doing.
The only one of your medical problems that I've gone through myself is a broken rib. That was bad enough without all of the extras. Prayers / mojo for you. -- Jamais le mal naura le dernier mot. La foi et lamour déplacent les montagnes de la haine. - Marguerite (Maggy) Barankitse
