Chicago jan 22nd updates

Hello all. I have been subscribing to the top tier of Comcast for a long time now, through all the upgrades of tiers. My parents also recently within the last year have gotten Comcast HSI as well. I live on the south side of Chicago, and my parents in the suburbs about 10-15M south of me. They recently received a letter stating their speeds would be doubled from 4mb to 8mb. I'm guessing this is because of the docsis 3.0 upgrades? Now I figured that I would get upgraded to the highest new tier as well, the ultra tier 22mb. Recently I received a letter from Comcast stating that come Jan 22nd, They would lower my sub from 69$ to 62.95 a month. There was no mention of any kind of upgrade. I'm not sure I understand this. Basically I will be paying the price of the ultra speed tier, but still getting 16mb downloads? Shouldn't I either be paying the price of the newly upgraded 8mb -> 16mb customers, or getting my line upgraded to ultra 22mb? If Comcast Steve or another Comcast rep could clear this up I would greatly appreciate it.

I got the same letter about the decrease in price. I am on the blast tier already. Letter just stated that due to difficult economic times, they are reducing the price from $69.95 to $62.95 a month. This takes effect on Jan. 20th. I am on a promo right now for $36.95/month for about 6 more months so it should drop to about $29.95. Not bad for 16/2 speeds with powerboost.

See this topic regarding Illinois' updates: »Is the DOCSIS 3 rollout complete in your area? Post here.

Your parents might be in one of those areas updated, which seems unlikely since you said they are in the southern suburbs.

This is weird since the 4 or 8Mbps tiers have been extinct basically for some time now.

The current tiers in non DOCSIS 3.0 are:

6/1Mbps tier
16/2Mbps tier

and in areas with the upgrades:

12/2Mbps
16/2Mbps
22/5Mbps
50/10Mbps

Where they with some other company before Comcast took over?

Yes its been about 4+ years, but before comcast took over I had at&t cable. My blast tier is recognized as 16/4 too.

Most likely your area isn't ready for Docsis 3.0 yet. There is alot of different variables that make one particular area d3 ready.

well every surrounding area either has it, or will by end of this month. Also if my area isn't ready by jan 20th, why would I keep being charged ultra speeds if I didn't have it?

That would be 16/2.

There has never been a 16/4 tier.

Whatever the situation, we do need to keep discussion of the new tiers in the appropriate topics. There are two of those stickied at the top of the forum.

One for the 16/2 - 12/2 tiers:
»Are 16/2 and 12/2 speed tiers in your area? Post here.

The other for DOCSIS 3.0 tiers:
