Who else could they have used? Probably wanted to have unique offering on major network and not compete with other high end phones.

Att has Iphone
Tmobile has the G1
Verizion has the Storm

Palm has historically used Sprint as alaunch partner, with AT&T following shortly in most cases. See the Treo 650, Treo 700w/x, Centro, Treo 800w, new Centro...you get the picture.

Plus Sprint has an awesome network (no, really) and for $30 over voice-only you get unlimited everything-but-voice, which is great for showcasing the performance of something like the Pre.

Compared with Verizon and AT&T, who would charge you$8 for 7pm nights and weekends, $10 for navigation, $30 for data, $20 for text messaging...yeah...

If the keyboard is good enough and a WiFi tethering app is available, I'm getting this phone instead of an HTC TouchPro as my upgrade path, no doubt. I can upgrade at 2 months in May...

LOL, ok. Sprint is better than Verizon(voice quality/price) and ATT(Customer service run by the Sicilian Mafia) anyday.
