| [Connectivity] Horrible packet loss in Chicago Hi there, hoping someone can interpret this and help me out. I'm experiencing awful packet loss, and Comcast asked me to delete my cookies...
Any ideas? Time for a new modem? Anything specific I can tell Comcast?

What indicator lights does the modem have and the current status of each. (i.e. constant or blinking)
These stay connected usually

Give a description of the cable & splitters configuration in your home leading to the modem.
None, just HSI, no cable.
If you have issues with packet loss, latency, or routing: Post a trace route to the server you're having issues with.
This is my first hop, packet loss to any destination, however:

| 68.86.115.93 is not your first hop beyond your router - it is the second. The CMTS that supports your modem is configured to not respond to pings at its default address.
Disconnect your router temporarily, connect a computer directly to the modem, power down the modem and bring it back up to recognize the computer. Use IPconfig to determine the address of your default gateway. ping that. It should respond.
Most routers beyond the CMTS are configured to drop some or all packets. You cannot determine packet loss by pinging them.

| That intermittent issue that could be cable wiring issue so call tech van to come out to checking it out at your house and don't buy another cable modem so your current cable modem is fine as it is functionality well. -- Professional Linux environmental blows microsoft windows out of the water. | |

| A lot of people in Chicago are having the same issues. I've had horrible packet losses since the Christmas week. At&T DSL was much better at responding to those issues rather than the "remove your cookies" suggestion by Comcast. How hard can it be to acknowledge there's a widespread issue in Chicago? | |

| Re: [Connectivity] Horrible packet loss in Chicago Well, it's been better this morning, but I don't trust it. To the above poster, I'm 14k feet from the CO, and AT&T can offer me 384/384. I'm about a mile from downtown Chicago, it's pretty sad that I have to choose between stable access or decent speeds in this day and age in one of the most advanced cities in America.
Modem stats now:
Downstream Value Frequency 717000000 Hz Signal to Noise Ratio 37 dB QAM QAM256 Network Access Control Object ON Power Level 10 dBmV
Upstream Value Channel ID 12 Frequency 34400000 Hz Ranging Service ID 2605 Symbol Rate 5.120 Msym/s Power Level 33 dBmV
Are these normal? Is the Downstrem dBmV high?

| Re: [Connectivity] Horrible packet loss in Chicago Wow, as soon as I posted that, packet loss returns. I refreshed the signal page on my modem, and the Upstream changed:
Downstream Value Frequency 717000000 Hz Signal to Noise Ratio 36 dB QAM QAM256 Network Access Control Object ON Power Level 10 dBmV
Upstream Value Channel ID 11 Frequency 29600000 Hz Ranging Service ID 2605 Symbol Rate 2.560 Msym/s Power Level 33 dBmV
Packet loss to dslreports.com:
Ping statistics for 209.123.109.175: Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 87, Lost = 13 (13% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 55ms, Maximum = 76ms, Average = 60ms

| yeah, same issue here on the north side (lincoln park). Intermittant packet loss for at least the past 3 days.
for a minute I thought it might be Windows 7 beta drivers/settings/registry... but I have checked everything I know of and see nothing amiss. -- Fly you fools!

| Yep, got packet loss and network congestion. Basic 56k modem speed down, but as-advertised speed out.
I posted on this board a few days ago about it, but nobody chimed in. Looks like I've found a crowd here.
I have solved my issue by resetting my NIC to defaults, doing some work in the Windows registry re: TCP IP paramters, and then bringing most data to defaults in Windows networking menus, with a few exceptions. Got my speedy connection back after reboot.
I suspected my computer was the problem when I resurrected a 9-yr old Thinkpad from its years of slumber, hooked it up to the router, and immediately got 1MB per second downloads. Well, jump my jeepers!
As with many things, the problem we have is our assumptions rather than our facts.
And then today I get letter from Comcast about boosting my speeds from 8Mbit to 16 Mbit. Talk about timing.

| Re: [Connectivity] Horrible packet loss in Chicago Not exactly sure if this is related or a separate problem entirely but I thought I would share what's been going on with me.
I live in the North suburbs and for the last 2 weeks have been having intermittent connection issues with both internet AND cable tv. The two are seemingly correlated since I will be watching television and the picture will freeze. At the EXACT same time if I try to access a website from my computer I lose internet connection. This has been increasingly frustrating since I will be playing a pc game while my wife watches and television and when the cable freezes the internet connection drops, like CLOCKWORK!
Like I said I'm not exactly sure if the problem is related to everything that you all are experiencing but I just thought I would share.

To all those IN chicago (this is for people in the city itself as it's the only thing and way I can help.)
About once a year I experience this issue with Comast and they spend weeks if not months sending line techs out to no avail.
So last year I came here looking for help and did some research online (when my connection worked)
CALL PHILIDELPHIA and the HEAD OFFICE and raise hell. It is the only way to get them to fix the issue.
Last year when this occured (get ready for this) they sent a total of 15 (that's right 15) line techs to my house (found noise, didnt find noise, bad post, reseated post) NOTHING fixed it.
So, I spent a month on the phone EVERYDAY with REGINA RICHARDSON at Comcast Philidelphia impressing on her that my neighborhood was having problems and that after 15 line techs they needed to look deeper. I ended up on the phone with the senior IT for the Northern Chicagoland Areea and it ended up being bad routing.
Here's the rub, you have to bug the *&%^ out of REGINA RICHARDSON at Comcast Philidelphia as the Escalation Team in Oakbrook will just keep sending techs out to your line.
Tell them of your problem, POINT THEM TO THIS TOPIC (REGINA RICHARDSON read the one I pointed her to and realized to many people in the same area were having issues not noise related and if anything had enough people bothering her to make it go away).
PLEASE ONLY CALL IF YOU'VE HAD TECHS OUT ALREADY and claim to have fixed the issue

| I'm in Evanston, and I've been having terrible speeds for many days now. Seen trucks on my street a few times.
Today averaging about 300Kb download (with 700Kb upload) on all 3 computers:
- laptop running Vista home pro over WiFi - desktop running XP Media Center over Cat5 hardwire - MacBook running OS X over WiFi
so I don't think the problem is related to any specific computer...
