Motorola 2210-02-1002 / 2210-02-1006 modem is junk!

The Motorola 2210-02-1002 and Motorola 2210-02-1006 modem is junk!

If you are ordering new service then get the 2Wire 2701HG-B Wireless Gateway instead of the Motorola 2210-02-1002 or the Motorola 2210-02-1006 modem because the 2Wire 2701HG-B Wireless Gateway is not junk.

If you already own a Motorola 2210-02-1002 or Motorola 2210-02-1006 modem that is working fine it's junk too! Yours just has not baked its self to death yet.

These modems were junk the day they rolled off the end of the assembly line. It's like a little EASY-BAKE® Oven inside them except instead of baking chocolate chip cookies these modems are baking Texas Instruments AR7 chip cookies.

Don't worry though because it seems like AT&T is replacing them even if they are out of warranty.

It's interesting that you post this. I've been fighting speed fluxuations with Extreme 3.0 with this modem, especially upload speed. After speaking with a couple of TS folks who insisted it is all my fault (with no explanation how/what is my fault), yesterday I finally connected with a TS rep that spent time trying to fix the problem.
When I changed from 1.5 to 3.0 the sales rep talked me into keeping the Motorola modem instead of getting the Home Network deal that comes with 3.0.
Yesterday the rep looked at my record of speed tests and noticed that the problem started around Dec. 1.
After testing stuff and getting my profile changed and no improvemant, he said apparently the modem is flakey and ordered the Home Network package for me. Hopefully it will arrive today.
So, is the 2Wire 2701HG-B Wireless Gateway the one I will be getting?
Thanks
Ken

I read and respect your opinions and am therefore asking the following questions. When I read the reviews about the 2wire, I get mixed signals.

I have 3.0 and am using the 2210-02-1006 as a bridged DSL modem. When it works, it is ok. I just had them replace it with a later S.N. beginning with #48 that is supposed to be better.
My wireless router takes care of my LAN at home with no problems.

Question is...will the 2wire work reliably as a bridged modem to feed my router that does the PPPoE and QOS?
As I indicated, when what I have now works, it works. Can the 2wire simply function as a bridged modem, better I hope than the Netopia, or is its main function to perform as a router as well.
In the past, I haven't had any good results when the DSL modem doubles as a router.

Thanks

I will confirm this also.I am replacing these on a daily basis. They seem to be lasting about 10 months or so .One thing to do if you have one is flip it over so that the very tiny air vents are more exposed.

ugh

@popsite.net

According to the website my 6.0 order is done processing as of today. And according to the FAQ this is the standard modem that's being shipped. Sooo is another* crappy modem on its way to my doorstep?

* I used the SpeedTouch USB when I first had DSL in 2002.

As far as I know AT&T Southeast is only sending out the Motorola 2210-02-1006 Wired Gateway or the 2Wire 2701HG-B Wireless Gateway for use with residential FastAccess DSL service.

If you upgraded to AT&T HomeNetworking then you should be receiving a 2Wire 2701HG-B Wireless Gateway.

For best performance with Extreme 6.0 AT&T recommends ETHERNET only.

Neither of these modems have the connectivity option of USB 1.1 which may inhibit full speeds with Xtreme 6.0 DSL service.

What they are recommending is to us an Ethernet connection instead of the USB 1.1 connection.

I reckon you are thinking that you should use a wired connection over a wireless connection. 802.11b/g will run fast enough for Xtreme 6.0 DSL service. Some wireless radios are better than others and some come with crappy drivers. Some older devices with 802.11b and a crappy radio/driver may have problems.

Troubleshooting for throughput speed problems should be done with a wired connection.

This is very true. My ZyXEL router will claim it's getting a 4 bar 54 mbps connection in my dining room but as soon as I start downloading ANYTHING it degrades its self to 2 bars, 12 mbps, then down to 1 bar, 2 mbps, and slowly to 1 mbps. It's pathetic. My Netopia 3347 was 200x better than this crappy thing. I've never had a wireless router this weak before... but that's a completely different story. Much different.

Bottom line, go for ethernet if you can, and if not, stick with a good wireless router as Airwolf7 has said.

There was a chipset change in the 2210 modems. The modems that have a serial number in the 35xxxxxx to 38xxxxxx range have Texas Instruments chips in them. In the modems with higher serial numbers there is a chipset by infinion. The ones with the TI chipset seem to be dying off at an alarming rate, but the newer chipset shows few issues. I collected a pile of defective 2210's and 95% of them that had unexplainable trouble (lack of lightning, physical damage, etc...) had the TI chips.

If they sent you a newer one that is supposed to work better then I don't guess it would not hurt to give it a honest chance. Truth be told I actually like the Motorola 2210-02-1006 modem. Mine is working just fine and I have had no troubles out of it. I modified it by cutting out the recessed Motorola logo on the top to let the heat out. This modification would void the warranty, but I don't care.

My Motorola 2210-02-1006 is serial number 3672xxxx. Mine has a Texas Instruments AR7 chip (TNETD7100ZDW).
.

It will work just fine as a "Bridge" modem. »AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »Bridge Mode for the 2Wire 2701HG-B

I have installed several of the 2Wire 2701HG-B Wireless Gateways for my customers and they have ran great, have great DSL statistics, and the customers are happy with them.

My solution was a bit less drastic. I "mount" them on an open wire-frame rack, along with the rest of my routers, switches, etc. In that environment (with 99.99% unrestricted airflow), mine are only slightly warm to the touch. My serial numbers are 47xxxxxx and 48xxxxxx which may also contribute to the lack of EASY-BAKE® Oven temperatures.

I had AT&T send me a modem a week ago because they never had when I swithced to AT&T and I was still using my 3341-ELK (earthlink) Netopia. I guess I should keep the 3341 around as a spare in case my new 2210 cooks itself in a year....

That sounds like a good plan to me.

I looked at your other thread and see that your modem's serial number is 49xxxxxx. Sounds like that is one with a newer chip in it. People say the one with the newer chip is better.

I've got the Motorola too but in the 35xxx serial number. I have it mounted in my Leviton enclosure with about 2 to 3" of air flow in between.

I do have a spare 3347W and a C90 Westell. Now, how can I go back to Bellsouth and have them send me a 2wire?

Unless this has recently changed (like the static IP option), if you are an Xtreme customer you are entitled to sign up for the Home Networking package. That package includes a free * 2wire wireless gateway.

* Free means that they will charge your account $100.00, but they will (in theory) send you a $100.00 mail-in rebate coupon. Of course (as usual), if you are a DSL Direct customer, that offer does not apply.

well...I called and they say the "FREE" modem only applies to new customers who order online. BUT, she can "upgrade" my modem for $60 only.

I told them that I have 3MBps service which qualify for the free modem. Their retort was, Yes, you have 3.0 which qualifies for the wireless home networking service for free. But not the modem....

So, I told them, how can I do wireless service when you won't give me a new wireless modem?
