Instant Messaging Clients are used for real-time text-based communication. While some may offer audio and or video options as well, not all do.
I didn't include web based messengers since they don't require a client but feel free to mention which if that's what you're using.
If I've missed a client that you're using please post, along with a link if possible.

No instant messaging for me.
If you're friend or family, you know my phone number, nothing else is so important I can't wait for an email.
Skype could be the exception for me if I had situation where it would save me money on a phone call but that's about it. |

I use Skype for text, voice, and webcam. It is reliable. Disable add on manager and the cpu usage is almost nil. |
