I was able to get to a network engineer at TCT, I am sending him our traceroutes as well as those ran from XO's core routers.

Yea; the problem is definitely with XO communications. I trace the same exact address, and after leaving bresnan, I connect through sprint. Total time is around 65ms.

well my isp is suppose to be upgrading their system in laurel, so it is capable of handling this new 8 meg service they are bringing out. Not sure what equipment they are going to use or when they are doing it but it is suppose to happen soon. Hopefully this will help me in the late evenings when im getting only 1-2 megs.

The network admin for my isp is suppose to contact xo.net about the problem. So does anyone get higher ping times there between about 3-11 or 12, usually my pings to that xo.net server is 25-35 but during the evening it is 40-70 pretty steadily.

Must just be congestion because it starts to do that between 3-12 on weekdays, Saturday Evenings, and most of Sunday. My ping to that server should be around 50-60. Still not sure if anyone with Bresnan is getting similar problems. I only know of one other person.

I have still been seeing it on a daily basis. It still does seem to be a problem, just not nearly as severe as it used to be. The latency only goes up a couple to about 20ms max now.

Nevermind...I just checked my smokeping again and sure enough, the high spikes are back.

2 months later - still no fix in Casper. Bresnan has to be the worst ISP out there (well at least in Casper). This company couldn't go under fast enough for me & sure hope some competition comes to Casper soon - although I doubt it.

Once again, this server is LESS THAN 5 MILES OR SO FROM ME... and I haven't taken one step out of your network. So don't ask me to ping yahoo.com when I haven't even made it out of Bresnan yet and averaging 145 or so pings to your DNS servers!

Also, no offense to cblegeekgirl (seriously) - but I've sent in numerous of Bresnan's so called network testing emails (that's the document they've been pushing for years...) & nothing ever comes of it from the next Tech level. Let's just face it - Bresnan doesn't really care to support it's customers - at least from my perspective in Casper.

Sorry for the rant folks - just so sick of this joke of an ISP after 2 years of basically no improvements in their network (or lack therof....)

I have sent in countless numbers (at least 20) of their 'test' forms when we were still one of their customers. Nothing ever came of them, no records of them, no anything. I had to start from square 1 each and every time I called/E-mailed because nothing is kept on record that I even had a problem, much less what we did to try and fix it or the tests that I ran.

Everytime I would get off the phone or they would reply to an E-mail, they would close the trouble ticket so that it appeared as if there wasn't a problem at all (ever wonder why they never seem to see a problem in a given area when they look to see if there are any open trouble tickets for that area?). To the higher techs/NOC group, no problem exists because there are no open trouble tickets to investigate/fix.

Again, no offense to their techs because they were all nice and at least pretended like they could and wanted to help me, but the policy for actually fixing things just isn't there.

hm, sorry to hear about that garrett. I know the Billings Network is pretty consistent most likely because of the population and my 4th and 5th hop is the billings servers. Whenever i get problems though they are in the xo.net servers.

Still been noticing it spiking up there to 200-1,000 at times, just not as long and not as much any more.

Bresnan has now started to route Jackson Wy. threw Billings. We had good connections threw Cheyeene. But now threw Billings they suck. Same issues as above. I added the 15 mb conection but only get that to bresnan internal speed test. Anything else is less than 5. Help desk says they cant control outside there network. BS they have an underpowered or over sold connection in Billings! I would switch to qwest but they are even worse. Bresnan had great service in Jackson but now it is all down hill. Going to demand my money back for the higher speed connection. I am sure that will go well. Not!

This is still not fixed yet, little irritating considering my isp said they were going to call xo.net and let them know about.

You might slow down in Billings around July....just saw this the other day. Well, at least it probably won't be a lot at night I suspect...
Billings School District 2 trustees approved new contracts for Internet and telephone service and energy projects at two schools during a special board meeting Monday.

Bresnan will provide Internet and telephone services to the district for five years beginning July 1. The contracts will increase Internet bandwidth and change the phone system to Voice Over Internet Protocol, said Karen Palmer, the district's director of technology.

Voice Over Internet Protocol, or VOIP, uses broadband Internet for telephone services. In the district's case, a portion of the broadband will be dedicated to telephone services so calls and online traffic don't interrupt each other, Palmer said.

Not sure how much more punishment Bresnan's excuse for a network can take...Especially out of their Billings system. The school district will probably get great service and higher priority due to a $20k contract and a nice big SLA sitting there though - at the expense of 'normal' residential customers I suspect.

With the high pings hitting right at your modem, this can indicate a couple of things, one you have a router or modem issue. Bypassing your router and running the test again will determine whether or not your modem is part of the problem. Also, you may also want to restart your computer and boot into safe mode with networking. This will bypass any and all extra software that may be tying up bandwidth on your computer and try running the test again to see what you get. If after all of that, you are still getting high times at the modem (the ip will start 10.), then you will want to contact your ISP to have them check the signals to your modem.

The school district is a commercial account with it's own fiber line which connects differently than the residential accounts would to the network. Fiber accounts are run a lot differently than a typical residential account and you shouldn't see any variations in any ISP's speed due to a change or addition of a commercial account in your area.

If your ISP contacted X/O about it, then they most likely did. However, due to Federal laws, one company has no access to make changes to or fix another companies equipment. If X/O isn't or won't fix the problem, there isn't much that the ISP can do to fix the issue.

You can look up who owns any equipment by their ip address at

It also sometimes provides contact information for the company that owns the equipment. If not, you can try doing a search for that companies website and then go to their contact us section to send any complaints their way.

Maybe the more complaints they get directly, the faster they will respond in fixing the issue.

so i called my isp asking about ping fluctuations im getting to the first node (10.xx.x.x), looks like my upstream power level isn't up to par. it's at 31.5, just curious if that would effect speeds, pings, etc. They say it should be 35+. A tech is coming the 24th to adjust it.
