ZeroShell is unable to connect to the net. That's what I gathered. However the computer doesn't seem to want to connect direct, I don't know why.
10-yes 11-yes 12-not quite sure if I did it right, but I'm able to access the web-management panel from 192.168.0.75...
There are a bunch of adaptors, two 'PCnet' ones, and two Intel ones listed... is this something common to the package, or what's on my system?
Yeah, none of the 4 changes anything.
From the ppp log:
22:34:23 Using interface ppp0 22:34:23 Connect: ppp0 /dev/pts/1 22:34:28 tcflush failed: Bad file descriptor 22:34:28 Exit. 22:34:33 pppd 2.4.3 started by root, uid 0 22:34:33 Using interface ppp0 22:34:33 Connect: ppp0 /dev/pts/0 22:35:04 LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests 22:35:04 Connection terminated. 22:35:04 Using interface ppp0 22:35:04 Connect: ppp0 /dev/pts/1 22:35:09 tcflush failed: Bad file descriptor 22:35:09 Exit.
rinse, repeat (when I have the router logged out from the DSL or logged in) |

Guspaz Guspaz Premium,MVM join:2001-11-05 Montreal, QC | reply to NBomb Those are what's on your system. You need to pick the one that connects to your modem.
If you don't know which one it is, you could try each of them. |

2 edits | I tried all 4 and nothing worked... but I managed to get it working direct to modem and it seems to be working. Trying step 22+ now.
Seems to be working now!
Is there any specific way of knowing if it's working correctly though? Just if the torrents go fast?
-----
OMG I think it's working! You guys are a godsend, Guspaz! :D |

| reply to DSL_Ricer I tried each of the virtual NIC settings (Bridged, HostOnly and NAT), but can't access the ZeroShell web page at 192.168.0.75 or ping the address. It works if I use VirtualBox, but I prefer to have all my virtual servers running in the same environment when they're all on the same computer.
What am I missing in the VMware setup? |
|
Guspaz Guspaz Premium,MVM join:2001-11-05 Montreal, QC | You definitely need to use Bridged networking with VMWare. I don't have a copy, so I can't really help debug that, but make sure your PC is on the right subnet. You may also want to try an alternate simulated NIC type if it gives you options. |

2 edits | reply to Guspaz Thanks for the guide, Guspaz.
I initially had some problems with getting Azureus to work (it would force XP to restart and give me the whole Windows has recovered from a serious error message) but after some changes in the settings, everything seems to be working alright.
Edit: Hmm... scratch that. It's still restarting at seemingly random times. Looks like I'll have to do some debugging and see what's up.
Edit #2: After switching to utorrent, Windows XP no longer restarts by itself so I guess I'll stick with utorrent. |

2 edits | reply to Guspaz said by Guspaz :Did you follow step 29? As for port forwarding, it actually took me a while to figure that out too (I didn't clue in to the "Virtual Server" wording): Thanks yet again! Forwarding was instantaneous. The moment I clicked + I went back to green! It felt good to know I didn't miss somethign obvious for a change.
More good: This has been running full-bore since around 3:30 AM and has been rock-solid - absolutely perfect. It also solves a weird problem I had with Windows log-in where I was still suffering from the Bell throttle on my upstream: at 6:00 PM every day I would be cut to 23 max - and I had to reduce that to about 10 in able to bring my downloads back to decent speeds. No longer the case here - a real bonus!
MTU: Yes, I did follow every line in your excellent directions. I double checked & ZeroShell reports back properly: ppp0: mtu 1487 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 3
BUT... There's also this: ETH00: mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 1000
I guess this is the problem. If so, can I safely change it? And if so, what would be safe? (I was fully functioning as high as 1480 and as low as 1454, havent' tried anything beyond that range.)
I can't thank you enough for all this help.
Btw, if you're keeping track of such things, this is running on a very weak little notebook. The CPU is an Intel T5200 which isn't even acknowledged by Intel, but at least I have 3 GB Ram (though Intel shared chipset.) And it's Vista.
EDIT/UPDATE: After a(n unintentional) reboot, I'm able to read the WaPo and I see it's going be pretty damn cold. No idea why this righted itself but it did. I'll pipe up again if the same problem re-occurs. |

| reply to Guspaz Hi Guspaz and thanks in advance for the guide. Unfortunately I'm not as good as you guys at doing stuff like that. I followed all the steps in your guide until I got to #15 which has me totally lost on what to do next...Any more detailed help would be greatly appreciated. I just don't understand what you mean that windows machine must be on 192.168.0.x nor do I have any idea where to change that setting. Sorry if this sounds totally dumb
Thank you |

| Go to Settings > Control Panel > Network Connections. (I'm assuming you're using XP, by the way.)
Right click your ethernet connection and click Properties.
Under "This connection uses the following items", click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
Click "use the following IP address". IP address: 192.168.0.30 (as an example) Subnet mask: Leave it as default. Default gateway: 192.168.0.75
Use the following DNS addresses: 192.168.0.75
That should do the trick but someone can chime in if I'm wrong. |

| reply to Guspaz Hi Guspaz, a little more help needed if you don't mind please? I followed the steps in your guide, got through the last step I was stuck in thanks to some help from here but I'm now stuck on step #22...when I type s to open the shell and type what I'm supposed to on the first line I get...failed host not found, I then type 'newline' and proceed to type #23 and when I press tab I getINIT: Id "7" respawning too fast:disabled for 5 minutes....
I'm sure I have no idea what to do next....:( |
