Re: [Speed] Chicago... Issues The thing that brought me out of the woodwork is that it wasn't always this way. I remember getting about 16Mbps within the last month or so. |
|
 | bri, you should contact the executive customer service group in Herndon, VA.. The number is listed earlier in the post. Explain the issue and whatever you have done to resolve it.. |

 | reply to patrone Just an update on my current status. My speeds have been fine for about a week and a half now in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago. I'm getting my full Mach 20 speeds. Just a note, when you guys run a speedtest, make sure to turn off your firewall prior to running it to get the true reading, because I notice when I have my firewall on it gives strange readings for my uploads and downloads. Hope all the best to those still having speed issues. |
|
 | reply to patrone did u do anything to fix it? |
|
|
|
 | reply to patrone Figured I'd run another speed test during what I'd assume to be non-peak hours.

I'll run more when I get home from work and when I go to bed to see if this is cyclical. |

 | reply to patrone said by patrone: 1/16 I spoke with Alice again this afternoon. ... Regardless, she reported that several people in my area had experienced the same problems. The problem was traced back to a node that was sending signals at "too high of a level." She didn't get too technical - so I'm not sure if that was the actual problem or not. She said that a crew fixed the problem last night. I finally gave in and called the Executive Support number and talked with Alice today. She was unaware of any known issues in our area. While she was looking up my information, she said that I was on Node 226(A?). I'm at Irving Park and Sheridan. She was going to check with the local office and get back to me today or tomorrow.
I told her about the LARGE group of us all having speed issues on the north side of the city. I suggest we all call in, so that they can have this documented. The support number is 703-434-8200.
I'll let you know what I find out. |

1 edit | I would recommend that anyone that is having this same issue, contact them and not let up, until the issue is resovled. This issue started for me on November 5, 2008, and has not really improved much since November 10, 2008. This morning, after not being contact by the local office as promised, I filed a complaint with the FCC. |

 | reply to bigbri9 Two more tests as time went on. One around 5pm

and another at 10pm.

Clearly this is related to the time of day or usage patterns in our node. I'll be calling tomorrow with this information. |

 | im experiencing a slow connection too. the problem started about 2 weeks ago, and i finally got fed up today and searched to see if anyone else had similar problems. sure enough, this forum showed up.
Is RCN working on a solution? has anyone who called RCN gotten the problem fixed?
fyi, im in wrigleyville. |
|
 | reply to patrone problem ? according to RCN's tier 1 tech support rep there is no problem and this is the way it's supposed to work. Sigh. |
|
 | reply to patrone I had my tier 2 tech visit this morning at 9:30.
Last night, my internet speed shot up to 10-11 Mbps. When the tech came this morning, I was still getting the same speed. Naturally, since there was nothing wrong, the tech said everything must be fixed and left.
Jump to 4:30pm and the internet speed is back down to 3 Mbps. I called tech support and a supervisor called the tech who came in this morning. He's supposed to come back here today.
Now, 8:00pm, after I called to complain again, the speed is back up to around 8 Mbps. Normal during what I think might be considered peak time.
I don't even know if this is possible, but every time I've had a tech come out, the speed issue seems to fix itself the day before the scheduled visit. Then it's right back to RCN's version of "normal" later on that day. Could there be something to this or just me being paranoid? |
|
 | reply to patrone Gotta be something to it. My speed's been fluctuating between 1 megabit to 15 megabit all day. |
|
 | reply to patrone So after, talking to several people in the corporate office along with an engineer and a week of the internet working like it actually should, this morning, they had an outage in my building, and now its back to 8Mbps at best during peak hours. Looks like I will be back on the phone with them tomorrow. |

I've got Mach 10, and I'm at Ashland & Addison.
My speed issues didn't start until Feb. 10 or so, but speeds seem to be reliably around 1.2Mbps on most weeknights. 9AM weekdays it seems to be back up to 5.0Mbps, but that's still a far cry from the 9's I was seeing prior to Feb. 10.
Upload speeds aren't affected.
Seems to me most of the folks replying to this thread are in Lakeview & Uptown, might it be an infrastructure issue?
Are other folks still having problems?
Thanks, |

Yeah, looks bad. |

 | reply to patrone It is a regional thing. I'm at Grace & Kenmore and am getting about 1.5 mbps out of the 20 I should be seeing during "peak" usage. I see around 8 - 12 Mbps when everyone is at work or sleeping. I know this is a regional thing because I have a friend in Roscoe village who actually gets 18/20 at the same time of day. |
|
 | reply to patrone I've been getting the same issues here on clark/hollywood street. I'm running a router with DD-WRT on it and looking at the bandwidth graphs, its seems like the speeds from the modem are fluctuating between 2.5Mbps to 7Mbps. I have 5Mbps/384kbps service. The upload is rather consistent but the way it is now, I can't play Left 4 Dead on my pc because the lag is horrible. I've even tested without the router and get the exact same results. I had AT&T before for 3 years and although it was only 3Mbps it NEVER gave me issues and was always consistent. RCN seems to be consistently INCONSISTENT! |
