 | I actually think mine is back to normal. I've been pulling good speeds IRL and on the RCN speedtest page. w00t for 18mpbs. |

 | reply to patrone ok, I'm back down to about 1 Mbps. This is insane. If this doesn't get fixed this week I'm getting satellite and dsl. I'll be paying way more than right now but at least I won't be dealing with this crap service. I just talked to a phone tech who insisted I was still connected to my router even though the router was powered off and across the room. He refused to "officially escalate" my issue because I wouldn't disconnect the router. I'm filing complaints with the city, the state and the fcc. |
|
 | It has been my experience that escalating your call wont get you anywhere. I have dealt with the corporate group as well as the local market people since December, and when they finally got my connetion to work as advertised, it only did so for 3 weeks. If the speeds are an issue for you, I would recommend sparing yourself the headache of calling them, and just look for an alternate service provider. Thats what I intend to start doing. |
|
 | reply to patrone I'm also searching for alternatives. I've been thinking about going to a 10 megabit package to save some money since I don't get anything close to 20. |

This is at 2:07PM today.
I'm on the 10 plan.
I powercycled the modem, powercycled the router.
What to do? |
|
 | reply to Gundam08 Gundam08- I wouldn't do that. I used to have the 5 megabit package and my speeds were even slower than they are now. Even though you aren't getting what you pay for right now, you will get even slower if you downgrade.
I wish I could find a good alternative. First of all, I love RCN's HD-DVR. I've never had an issue with the TV part of the service. I don't want Comcast because of the download caps and the HD channel down-sampling. My apartment building doesn't get u-verse. It's too expensive to have RCN cable and separate dsl. I'm stuck. |

 | Hi, In peak times my speed is dropping from 10Mbs to 2 -3 Mbs. Used to happen once in a while but now it's consistently every weeknight. It's a usable connection, but very annoying. Funny how I used to think 1Mbs was fast File size transferred : 14.75 MB (15468724 bytes) Total time taken : 44.95 seconds (44953 milliseconds) Throughput : 344.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second] = 0.34 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second] = 2752.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second] = 2.75 Mbps [Megabit-per-second] MAC: 00:1e:46:b9:85:fe Location Diversey & Sheridan Anyone else in the area experiencing this recently? |
|
1 edit | Mine internet has been almost unusable for the last couple weeks. I'm at Sheridan and Oakdale and I have no choice but to use RCN. I dunno if calling will do anygood. |
|
 | reply to Gundam08 My speeds haven't improved for sometime now, so it's a lost cause to try to get RCN to fix it. I'm in the process of trying to get AT&T DSL myself to get out of this RCN nightmare. Of course, the RCN gods have deemed it so that my DSL won't connect out the box so I had to call AT&T several times to get someone out here to look at the line. I'd rather pay $45 a month for the 6mbs direct DSL service (no phone line) than whatever I pay RCN for a 10mbs line that I would get 1mbs at night from. I did check speakeasy and they offer a 10mbs service to me but they want an unheard of $180/month for it. I guess they must be happy serving the 5 customers in the area who pay 1990s-prices for DSL. |
|
 | reply to patrone I'm fed up with it again. Ran a speed test two nights ago and got 2 Mbps of the 10 I pay for. I called tech support AGAIN and they opened a ticket. Last night, I called for a status update because the speed had dropped even lower. The phone tech said the ticket had been closed because there is already a "network upgrade" planned for my area (Rogers Park). They wouldn't tell me when this upgrade is planned to be completed, or how long it has been planned for. I'm calling to get a credit for the slow speeds today and hopefully to force more info about the "upgrade." |

Good for you for leaving, its the only way we can show them that they have too many people on their lines and need to upgrade certain areas, I have the same issues, I pay for the 20Mbps service, but from 6pm to 2am I only get 10Mbps if I am lucky. |

 | said by rcbrcb:Speeds for me have been getting better the last month or so.... I'm on the 10Mbps Plan I noticed my speeds getting better this week too. Not 10mbs, but hey I'll take it.

I tried getting AT&T DSL and that was a futile effort. Of course the self installation didn't work and it took three service calls to get someone out here to wire my box. They said I qualified for 6mbit but all I got was a 3mbit connection that disconnected a lot. I live in an older apartment so I am going to chalk it up to the internal wiring which I have no control over.
The funny is that I tried switching to Comcast and it turns out my cable line is in a locked RCN box that Comcast couldn't get into. They told me that I have to call RCN to come out and leave the box open for them... eh yeah. Now that my speeds are better, I think I will stick with RCN to avoid the hassle of switching. |

Re: [Speed] Chicago... Issues I've made the switch to Comcast and I'm happy with it. Funny thing is that the Comcast installers said that there was an old squirrel nest in the RCN lock box on my building with a bunch of chewed up wires. He said the shielding was gone from the cables and that was probably the reason I was having such a high packet loss but not a drop in the signal. |
