I came across that distinction as a kid. Growing up in Philadelphia, it was always soda. But when I visited my cousins in upstate NY, it was pop.

Down here in the South, it's just Coke or Pepsi, depending on which you prefer. Most people call everything a "Coke", even if it's a Dr. Pepper or Mtn. Dew.

When i go to NC i ask- Coke products or Pepsi LoL. i learned my lesson there by saying Pepsi and getting a flat Coke once.
