[Burlington] Random sound disruptions with HD channels

Hey,
I just got the Cogeco Digital 1 select package with the HD channels. Everything is great so far except for one thing.

I'm not sure whats up, but when I'm watching a movie/tv show (so far I've notice this only happens with HD channels) randomly, the sound will "mute" or something... its _like_ the sound is being censored but I know its not actually done on purpose. There isn't really any static and its just for a second or two and it happens randomly... its odd.

Any idea what might be wrong? I'm using an HDMI cable for Audio/Video.

Thanks,
Aaron

Re: [Burlington] Random sound disruptions with HD channels

I just watched a show just now and it was working fine, no sound glitches nothing. Why was there some maintenance or something going on?

Im in Kingston and have noticed this as well, I thought like you it might be a cable or setup issue. There is no way I can tell when it going to happen, sometimes days go by and nothing then bam, one thing I will look at though is I think I have seen this on regular channels as well. For certain it all started when I got a digital box.

exseven,

Can you clarify on this fix? (Also, how do you know about this? Or are you a Cogeco employee?)

Anyways, I still received audio dropouts while watching the new episode of Rick Mercer Report tonight in HD.

Is this supposed fix through a firmware update for HD receviers? (I have a DCT6416)

Re: [Burlington] Random sound disruptions with HD channels

Yep, I can confirm that this is still happening. Was just watching a movie in HD and the sound sudden "muted" for a second or two.

I have the same receiver as David_T.

Aaron

Re: [Burlington] Random sound disruptions with HD channels

I am in Oakville and I get the same sound drop-out for a second or two on the HD channels. It has been like that for about a year for me. It does not happen often, maybe once or twice an hour.

If I remember correctly, it was posted here about a year ago, the sound drop-out was an issue with the HD box. I have HD with PVR.

Re: [Burlington] Random sound disruptions with HD channels

Seems like it might be the box, since we all have the DCT6416. Anyone using the standard HD receiver and experiencing this issue? Is there any firmware update for this issue?

This issue happens for pretty much every movie I watch, most likely because they are long enough for it to occur.

I have a DCT6200 (HD) receiver on another TV. I don't use it as much, but I have never experienced a sound dropout on it.

Re: [Burlington] Random sound disruptions with HD channels

According to exseven, when I pmed him he said:
quote:
It should have been fixed but is being reinvestigated. Last night i did not have any disruptions myself but did tuesday night
And judging by other threads, I'm guessing he is a Cogeco Employee.

Also I did not receive any disruptions last night as well :/

@bell.ca
I have the 6416, and my audio has been dropping out on the HD channels to in the last month, seems to be getting more frequently the past couple days

Audio Drops

@teksavvy.com
I have the 6416, same thing is happening to me. Audio drops randomly for 3-5 seconds, on the HD stations, it happens the most on TMN-HD.

Even when I go back and replay it with the DVR, the exact same spot the audio is dropped.

I see it as well with HD channels. Even when I replay it with my DVR same result. My audio/video receiver shows no audio when it happens so it's not coming from my setup and the audio is not being sent by the digital box.

Exseven is completely correct. There is currently severe audio dropouts with various HD channels all over the map over the last few days. They are working to fix it as we speak. It's happening to almost everyone at this point so until we know this is fixed if you call in this is the information you will get. No word on progress as of yet but it's a priority at this point and it is being communicated on down the line so any technical representative can confirm this for you if you are calling them tonight. For those of you having issues over the past year, that's not cool. I have an 6412 without dropouts have had it almost two years now. That needs to be looked at. Hope it helps...

Unfortunately, this has been an issue for more than the last few days.

I subscribed to Cogeco cable in September and have been experiencing it ever since. There is also a ton of users at DigitalHome who have been reporting these sound dropouts for a long time now.

The odd thing is, Shaw users, who use the same receivers as Cogeco, are experiencing the exact same audio dropout issues.

So my guess is that this is an issue with the receivers.

Re: [Burlington] Random sound disruptions with HD channels

If its been happening for a while now AND people who use other services are experiencing the same issues with the same receivers- Isn't it highly likely (and logical) to assume it is the receivers?

If so...what could Cogeco possible be doing to "resolve" this issue other than get these receivers replaced by one that does not have this bug (if there is another Motorola HD/PVR receiver).

Worst part is, they are still providing the receivers...*sigh*. I had the non-pvr receiver for a couple of days and I did not notice any sound issues what-so-ever, only once I got the PVR box did this started to occur.

Sometimes it becomes terrible to the point where an entire minute is filled with continuous disruptions, lose half of the dialogue.

Chances are that if it is the receivers which are problematic (and they likely are) that the issue can be resolved via firmware update.

Note my previous reference around my 6208 non PVR unit. I've had this issue for well over 3 years now or when the 6208 originally was released so closer to 4 years. Now both my 6208 & 6416 both do this daily. The original fix was reboot the box via unplugging the unit completely, let it cool down (even though I have ample room around both of them). That suggested fix, during discussion at digitalhome years ago was successful, if done every 1-2 months. This problem did however seem to go away over the last 6 months but has crept back as I have not shut them down in that time frame. These essentially are computers with what seems like crappy OS that need rebooting every once in a while. If you reboot and there are still issues within 20-30 days then that is something new. This issue is years old with the Motorola equipment.

Well I just got the unit, not even 30 days have past and I notice it, so it cannot be that :/ Definitely in need of a firmware update to fix it.

Re: [Burlington] Random sound disruptions with HD channels

don't rule it out, my first window 4 years ago was 15-20 days when the audio drop outs would start and that was immediately after the brand new 6208 came to my door, again this is not a new problem, it's 4 years old if not older. Firmware update would make sense if during the last 4 years there has been no firmware updates. Either way it's a major pain in the arse if you're watching an excellent Concert on HDNET and audio disappears all the time. I should start and have my REW program measuring audio output and start billing Cogeco back for the lost audio portions, lol yip grasping there aren't I

@bell.ca
I've been experencing fewer dropouts as of late, and the drop outs don't last as long either, around 1 second, vs. 3-4 seconds before. Hopefully soon it will be 0.

I have both component and a HDMI cable. I notice that the tv takes a long time to get the signal through the HDMI cable.

I also notice that the box hiccups as well. I also noticed that while I was watching a SD version of Supernatural that was taped, the audio was slow. So much the octave went down by one.

Crazy.

I also have a 6416 and also experience sound dropouts as well, but I have also talked to friends on both Cogeco and Rogers and they also experience the same thing.

From what I've heard this is a common problem related to HD and the amount of bandwidth it requires but I couldn't tell you what's causing it.

It would also be interesting to hear if Satelite customers that have HD like Bell also experience the sound dropouts.

Re: [Burlington] Random sound disruptions with HD channels

Hamilton 1 you hit the nail on the head. It is an infrastructure problem with delivering the bandwidth necessary for HD programming. The pipe isn't big enough to carry all that they cram into it, something has to give. Sometimes it's audio other times it freeze frame video or pixelated video. There's been alot of articles written about this issue. Cable co's do not want to hear about or address it. It requires mega $$ in system upgrades to give HD it's proper pipe allocation and they are not about to spend the money. No firmware fix is going to solve this problem

Re: [Burlington] Random sound disruptions with HD channels

DrDog, although I'd like to request vdbleu to post the articles written that directly relate to audio drop out, I can understand the arguement. Also please take note it is not only the PVR box's. It just happens most of the users here are commenting on the 6416. I've had this issue come and go with the 6208 for over 4 years and over the last 3 or so months both my PVR & Non PVR exhibit the same audio drop out quite frequently, I will try and find the 3 year old thread on digital home I had going before the PVR was even out (excuse the timing if I'm off it's been way too long to pinpoint exact issue dates)

Here's just one that was dealt with by CTV news last year. This is old news, cable co's have being doing this forever.
Nothing wrong with the boxes.

Its not just Cogeco - they all do it. Dispite what they say this affects both video and audio quality.

Not sure what Cogeco's compression is but I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of stations are 3:1

Re: [Burlington] Random sound disruptions with HD channels

Affects video quality? Like my Global Channel? 24, Heroes and etc look like shit, mainly 24 though. I mean its not even really HD the quality at times, size wise maybe, but quality wise hell no. Its like I see water-ripples. And only on this channel...and mainly for 24 I believe.

So if this is the case, I'm guessing there will never be a fix?

The churn rate on HD PVR subscriptions must be quite high if this problem is widespread. Does it affect HD boxes without PVR as well?

Safe bet its a firmware issue. Mountaincable uses the same boxes 6200,6412 and 6416 but has different firmware and no audio drop outs. Cogeco did a firmware upgrade back in October I think but still problems with features like series recordings and search. Seems Cogeco isn't working hard to resolve this issue but they love asking us when we call in, "Have I resolved the reason for your call."
