The only accurate way is to have the phone company do a mechanized loop test (MLT). This does a parametric test of the line. As a back of the envelop multiplying downstream attenuation by 250 gives you some idea. Keep in mind distance is a function of type of wire used and bridged taps.

Either use an extension cord to power up the modem at the NID or get a telephone extension cord to plug into the NID while modem and you stay nice and warm in the house.

Extension cord for modem power and either a laptop, long ethernet cable, or wireless for pc access.

Ok...let me see what my setup is like.

How can I tell that I'm close to the office...is it because the attenuation is under 20?

Your stats are bizarre. Based on Attenuation you are just about on top of the Central Office yet margin is very low.

Connecting modem to NID as Jodokast96 See Profile suggest disconnects inside wiring/equipment. If stats improve something within your residence is degrading DSL.

How is phone service? Any noise on line especially when phone first picked up? Do you hear other voices on the line (crosstalk). If so call Voice repair, not Verizon on line to fix service.

Can you connect the modem to the NID and pull the stats from there? I'm guessing there is some sort of internal wiring problem.
