This does a parametric test of the line. As a back of the envelop multiplying downstream attenuation by 250 gives you some idea. Keep in mind distance is a function of type of wire used and bridged taps.

said by LeftyJR :How do I give the modem power outside? My NID is pretty far from any power outlet. Either use an extension cord to power up the modem at the NID or get a telephone extension cord to plug into the NID while modem and you stay nice and warm in the house.
