What does a camshaft sensor do?

I just had mine replaced, and want to make sure I wasn't hoodwinked into thinking I needed one.

Can would loose power at 3K RPM.

Re: What does a camshaft regulator do?

What make/model/year?

Camshaft regulator? Only thing that comes to mind for me is some sort of VCT actuator.

2001 VW Jetta 5 Speed (NOT AN AUTOMATIC) 2.0 LTR engine.

I thought that's what it was, let me go out to it and get the paperwork to see EXACTLY what it's called....

Camshaft Sensor, not regulator.....

It could cause power delivery and other sorts of issues, yes, if it was failing. If everything's working perfectly now, I don't see any reason to doubt the work.

Re: What does a camshaft sensor do?

I'm not as familiar with the newest stuff, but I can only assume its basically the same thing as a crank trigger and is used in lieu of a distributor to time the injector pulses and spark plug firing.

Yeah, I just did a Google search on sensor instead of regulator nd got a few hits that explained it better.

Does exactly what its title says it does.. It's the position sensor so the computer knows the position of the crank. If it was bad you'd have a car that doesn't start, runs bad or power loss. If the sensor is off just a little bit then you wouldn't notice anything but it wouldn't be accurate at detecting misfires.

As far as I know that's what it is.

In a nutshell, yes.

If the engine has continuously variable valve timing, then depending on its location, it may also be used as feedback for camshaft position control.

Some DOHC engines may have up to 3 camshaft position sensors per bank.
One in front of the VVT actuators, and one on each camshaft on the position controlled side of each VVT actuator (these are the ones for position control feedback).
