3 edits | Upgraded to DSL Pro, only getting 2.0Mbps - 1.5 mi from COI called and upgraded from DSL Express (1.5Mbps) to DSL Pro (3.0Mbps) last week. The salesperson told us it would take a few days (until last Thursday) but the speed has stalled out at just under 2Mbps (1984 Kbps). During their "testing" period the speed never got over 2Mbps and actually came down a bit on Thursday itself to settle where it's at.
I tried cycling the DSL modem but nothing changed. My house is only about 5 years old. The jack my DSL is plugged into was wired with station wire or CAT3 so I tried re-wiring the jack with new CAT5e from the exterior box but the speed never picked up.
I live about 1.5 mi (2375 meters) as the crow flies from my CO. When I first got DSL it took a few days to get up to 1.5 Mbps (it stayed around 786Kbps for a day or two). When I called to complain/cancel they said they'd fix it and, tada, it was up to speed a day or two later.
Is this something SBC has any control over? Can they fix it and up the speed or am I really max'ing it out?. I also wondered if anyone else lived farther from their CO and was able to get full speed (3.0Mbps+).
Below are the connection details from my 2Wire DSL Gateway:
DSL Connection Details
DSL Line (Wire Pair): Line 1 (inner pair)
Protocol: G.DMT
Downstream Rate: 1984 kbps
Upstream Rate: 512 kbps
Channel: Fast
Current Noise Margin: 11.0 dB (Downstream), 16.0 dB (Upstream)
Current Attenuation: 54.8 dB (Downstream), 31.5 dB (Upstream)
Current Output Power: 18.0 dB (Downstream), 11.9 dB (Upstream)
Thanks! | |

1 edit | Re: Upgraded to DSL Pro, only getting 2.0Mbps - 1.5 mi from CO There is an automatic, 10-day long, two-speed step, speed ramp on upgrades for the lines connected to a CO. You are on the ramp. Leave your 2Wire on 24/7 to complete the speed ramp.
You can check if your line has enough maxrate "headroom" to handle the full 3008 speeds here: »homeportal/management/link_statistics.html
More advanced 2Wire info here: »Ameritech - SBC FAQ »Where is all the fancy stuff? (Management/Diagnostic Console)
Chances are high that with an attenuation of 54.8 dB your line will fail to make the speed steps in the next 10 days. If that happens the the techs in AT&T Direct forum can manually raise your speed to the full 3008 IF your line can support that speed stably. Wait until your 10 days have passed before taking it to them.

| Re: Upgraded to DSL Pro, only getting 2.0Mbps - 1.5 mi from COAwesome, thanks for the info! I assume the Max Rate below indicates the fastest speed my router can handle?
DSL Down Up
Current Rate: 1984 kbs 512 kbs Max Rate: 3616 kbs 836 kbs
Current Connection:
Current Noise Margin 11.0 dB 16.0 dB Current Attenuation 54.8 dB 31.5 dB Current Output Power 18.1 dB 11.9 dB

| Yeah, that's the fastest your 2Wire thinks it can do on your line.
If your line is a quiet one (no DSL frequency noises), it should be able to handle full 3008 speeds. ... just barely. When the modem syncs at a speed, it is really using an additional portion of the maxrate to maintain stability by bit load swapping. That extra reserve it needs to give you uninterrupted sync is about 10% of the sync speed, so figure you need an absolute minimum maxrate of 3300. You won't have a lot of spare maxrate margin above that and you can never have too much spare maxrate margin.
How long has it been since your Pro speed upgrade started?

1 edit | Re: Upgraded to DSL Pro, only getting 2.0Mbps - 1.5 mi from CO We called to upgrade last Tuesday afternoon I think.
Fortunately the 1984 kbps I do get works fantastically. I can get about 1.7-1.8 Mbps through speed tests on the PC that's wired to the router. But another 1 Mbps sure would be nice!

| So you might be four or five days into your speed jump from Express? Generally if the next speed jump to 2496 doesn't happen by five or six days after ramp start, it won't ever happen automatically. ... but be sure to wait the full 10 days before posting in Direct. I think the techs in Direct can't over ride the 10-day ramp or are sternly warned not to do so by management.
AT&T Direct form is here: »/forum/sbcdirect and they even have a special posting category for failed upgrades.

David No,there is another. Premium,VIP join:2002-05-30 Granite City, IL clubs: | Set to 2496/512. That's probably as best as I can get out of it. The noise margin is going to be the big player here. You are almost 12k from the C.O. so you are just about at the edge for pro service.
