1 edit | [speed/latency] Connection Speed Degraded So, For about 2 years I've lived at this address with DRY Loop DSL service at 3 mbps (Actual connection speed was slightly higher than 3).
Well, lately I've noticed my net connection was a bit slow, so i look at my modem and see this:
Modem Status Connected DownStream Connection Speed 1902 kbps UpStream Connection Speed 819 kbps
I will call support tomorrow, but I'm already convinced it won't do anything at all. My faith in fairpoint/verizon is so low that I expect them to tell me that "not everybody gets the highest speeds, I'm lucky to get anything at all."
I'm frustrated because I feel like I'm pretty much stuck. I have little option to do anything else.
Edit: I should add that every time I restart my router, I get a different number. It varies as low as 1500 kbps down and stays around 820 up.
I spoke with a netgear tech about two months ago, and I don't remember the stats on my line, but he said they were good. This time around, I'm not sure if they're still good, but I'll post:
Line Attenuation Down: 42.0 db Up: 29.2 db
Noise Margin Down: 6.3 db Up: 9.9 db |
|
 | Just a follow up- I posted in the verizon direct forum (as they're still handeling fairpoint support), and they noticed the problem. Apparently, I've been mistakenly downgraded to the 1.5 plan, despite my paying for the 3 plan. They intend to fix it, so I'll report back here later, but it's still frustrating because the last week of frustration with my connection was most likely due to a fairpoint switchover problem. |

| reply to FredFredrick My guess is the reason you were downgraded to lower speed is because margin is so poor. What sync rate does the modem report?
While are waiting for Verizon direct might want to reboot the modem and see what stats look like and temporally connect modem to Telco NID test jack to see if inside wiring/equipment is degrading DSL performance.

 | I have rebooted a few times, and i keep getting low rates. The rates vary between 1700 and 1900 (according to the modem stats).
Why would the margin have changed? I've been over 3046 kbps for almost 2 years before this... |

 | Neat, well, they fixed it yesterday while I was at work. A combo of Verizone Direct forum and fairpoint tech. Neato. |

| Good to hear.
So you are back at 3000/768 with good margins?
Any idea what the did?

 | These are my stats now: Relative Capacity [%]: 22 74 Noise Margin [dB]: 21.3 17.6 Transmit Signal Power [dBm]: 5.0 11.8 Attenuation [dB]: 32.5 16.2 Bit Rate [kb/s]: 3360 863
I couldn't tell you what they did exactly, but that I heard from the Fairpoint guy was that he was going on location to test the line. I'm assuming he saw what ever the problem was and fixed it. They didn't say much to me, just told me it was resolved. |
