anon posted : We are in Frisco/Plantation Development and Verizon started laying cable here a couple months ago. They have made it to our street, painted the lines, dug some holes etc... So, it should not be long. We are one of those "areas near out of franchise" that has AT&T. Man, AT&T ISP service really stinks in the area. I remember upgrading their dsl service once last year, thinking it would increase the speed. We had an old contract and program that had not been changed in about 4 years. But instead of getting better, everything got slower. A lot slower. I think I went from a slow 3000kpbs to about 1500. I couldn't believe it. I talked with techs each day for about two weeks. Each time they told me it might take a couple days before I saw a significant increase in speed. Two weeks later I still saw a significant decrease in speed. They sent a tech out and "verified" that everything was working just fine, even though he would not let me see the results of his test. I even asked if I could just return to the previous account specs and they said no. So I said bye and started using TW. It is about 4 times faster, cheaper and more stable. I have talked with neighbors all around the area and almost everyone of them had been using AT&T as an ISP at one time but because of the really bad service/speed, switched to TW. I guess AT&T just likes supplying faulty ISP service at ridiculously high prices.

vinnie97 posted : Thanks for that bit of history delineation. The only reason I can think of them not overbuilding into the aforementioned area in Garland (bordering Mesquite, just south of I-30 and west of Lake Ray Hubbard) is due to lack of facilities in the area...but as I insinuated, FIOS is available in an apartment complex literally a block away from a friend whose only broadband option is TWC. His entire subdivision and likely others nearby all the way to the border of Mesquite are likely AT&T-owned and managed and I had hoped this recent trend of overbuilding would not be limited to only the northern counties. I guess it's a Telco no man's land and I'm sure Time Warner has no problems with that.

wesm posted : I believe VZ will only overbuild where they have nearby facilities to reach into the new areas. Dallas County (and City of Dallas proper, regardless of county) was assigned ("gifted") to Southwestern Bell back in the day and General Telephone and Electric (GTE) got whatever SWB didn't want. All of the cities you've listed have AT&T and Verizon facilities, mostly by virtue of historical build-out patterns. Dallas will likely never see the kind of build out found in other areas because there's simply no Verizon facilities (of use to a large deployment) in the entire area.
--
Opinions expressed here are mine and not my employer's.
