I am not exactly an average user. I do actually stream a lot of video. Maybe if Netflix didn't have such a piss poor HD selection I'd use more and probably hit my 100GB cap. My usage hasn't gone over 100GB and I use slingbox and download TiVocasts a lot. The cost per GB after the cap is $1. A few bucks a month extra isn't going to hurt me, even if I do go over, which is probably never.

Furthermore with a 6 meg connection, many people haven't been able to stream Netflix in HD. With the 30 meg connection I am pretty much guaranteed to stream HD because I have a lot of headroom. On the worst days my connection barely goes below 25 megs. On most days it is at 27-29 megs.

Speed is more important to me than caps, and Embarq's offering to me in the speed department has been piss poor. Verizon in other parts of the state is offering 50/20 FiOS. Copper twisted pair is so last century.

This is another reason I am not getting Embarq DSL. Service Electric has upgraded their headend and cable plant to offer DOCSIS3. Embarq is only offering ADSL2 and is dragging its feet on fiber to the home, throwing out a few bones but not really doing anything. The last thing I heard is that they're up for sale to CenturyTel, and from what I gather, this won't mean fiber to the home anytime soon.

For the 30M tier which I am on, it is 2M upload. They are capable of more, over 100M since it is DOCSIS3. How likely we are to see that remains to be seen.

I quote the $41.95 price (for 10M) because most people also subscribe to pay TV service in addition to broadband. I also use vonage so I don't have a pots phone nor do I want one.

Yes there are caps of 60G each way for the 10M tier and 100G each way for the 30M tier which is the only bad thing. Reliability is good. Maybe I'm envious...5 Mb DSL is the max here, and $57 per month would be for "12/896" that's really about 10/700 with Qwest. Even then interleave makes things seem even slower.

No, I'm not terribly fond of the fact that line attenuation makes 10 Mbit DSL unavailable for lots of people, but $55 per month for naked 10/896 internet?
