Telcel 2048/256 report card

I recently upgraded my service from 512/256 to 2048/256. I was getting very erratic performance - after rebooting my antique Speedstream 5200 modem, I could see acceptable download speeds, but then it would slowly degenerate back down towards ~200kbps. I made multiple calls to tech support (01-800-123-2222, ask for an english-speaking support tech). I finally convinced them to swap out modems for a newer Thomson wireless modem they're now providing to new accounts, and that seems to have stabilized things. Typical download speeds are now >1600kbps.

The current promotion for the 2Mb service is $999/month. This includes unlimited local and long distance within Mexico, plus WiFi access at their public portals. I was paying about $850/month for 512kb service before, so it was a no-brainer to upgrade to the better value.

Hope the info about the aging Speedstream 5200 not sustaining higher speeds might help someone else.
