[OOL] Count me in: boost is dead

Since yesterday (Jan. 15th), I'm experiencing up to 100% packet loss in 07663. Small pings get about 5-50% packet loss, depending on the moon phase. Larger packets - 1k, for example - 40-100% loss. Internet connection is completely unusable: can't send e-mail, can't IM, can't do pretty much anything. Good thing I have EvDO card from Sprint, so at least I can use my laptop to browse, and to serve as a wireless access point for other computers in my house, so they can connect to the internet via this card.

Called OOL support yesterday - they've sent tech today. The tech was completely clueless and didn't even know whatta heck I was talking about, when I mentioned "ping" and looked at the "ping" command output like it was some poisonous snake. He had no clue what was going on, plugged some device into the cable directly, which apparently was sending 256 byte pings, and said everything is fine. Then called someone (lead tech or something), who said there's a group issue, and should be fixed by weekend (which is tomorrow).

Called OOL support today again - they still have absolutely no clue and offered to send another tech... This is the most ridiculous situation I've ever had.

Everything indicates I will have to switch back to Verizon FIOS again... Which kinda sucks, as they only have 20/20 megabit service for more money than OOL (or 50/20 megabit for almost 3 times the price of OOL).

Going to place an order tomorrow... Good thing I have a choice, and I really feel for all who don't...

Called OOL, removed Boost to see if it helps. Will update once the removal takes effect...

Jeez, it's been 1.5 hours since my call - and the Boost is still on... Even rebooted my modem - no luck. How long does it take to turn a service off???

Re-register modem and boost will come off.

Same problems in 06824.

I even brought my cable modem in this AM & swapped it out. I'm still seeing pretty bad packet loss after swapping the cm.

OK, I've finally got the Boost removed. It's 15/2 now (yuck!) and so far no packet loss.

I'm going to try to re-activate Boost tomorrow afternoon, or on Monay and if the problem is not resolved - will switch to FIOS.

Re-register modem
How is this done? I remember in the past that you went to a special page but the one in the install book from a while back does not work anymore. I was given a WebStar modem when I had a service call (that did not do anything about my upload speed getting chopped back from 5Mbs to 2.5Mbs in conjunction with a node split) and since it did not help, I want to go back to my owned Motorola SB5100

man, did it take like 24 hours for your boost to get de-activated?

they swapped my modem out today, for no apparent reason, and it did nothing so i canceled my boost too.

anything is better than what i got now...weak ass wireless "borrowed" from someone down the block.

Yep. Almost 24 hours to get it deactivated, and even then, I think it was thanks to a OOLTECH from Optimum Online Direct forum on this site.

Oh, and not I have to figure out what to do with my e-mail, because I have my personal mail server (with my own domain), which I run on my home Mac Mini... Without Boost port 25 is being filtered So hopefully they fix the Boost by the end of Sunday, because I don't know how long it will take to get FIOS re-instated...

You may want to double check if FiOS has port 25 open. I know Port 80 is blocked, and I think 25 may also be. That's the only thing holding me back from getting FiOS (which just went live in my area a couple weeks ago): I need port 80.

I've had FIOS before I switched to OOL, and all ports were open. I don't remember if that was the default, or if I've had to turn them on somewhere on Verizon's web site (like you do with OOL Boost). But yeah, it worked fine. The only reason I switched to OOL was that I don't really need much of an upstream, but 30 megabit down certainly beat the Verizon's 20

you can get a free google hosted apps account and change your MX and let gmail handle mail for your domain for a while until you get this squared away.

Even Port 80? Everything I've read indicates Port 80 is closed unless you have a Business account w/ Static IP address.

Port 80 is closed on FiOS unless you have a static business account. They even block it on dynamic, and their cheapest package for 20/20 with static IP is a 2 year contract of $139 a month. They really want their money for those of us nuking their bandwidth with servers, that's for sure.

my boost is gone and my net is actually usable now.

hopefully they fix boost. I miss my 30/5 but i will say 15/2 is better than 30/.00001

Do not reactivate Boost! I did the same, and after a few days, same problem came back... There is a major problem with Boost that developed a few weeks ago. Use non-boost and all is fine.
