funny.

You curmudgeonly people are funny...this is (IMO) pretty cool new technology which is designed to improve service for those that have poor coverage, and while not knowing the details of the pricing, will likely save many a significant amount of money...there was a lot spent on designing it, you want them to give it to you??

In cases like this yes... as they will see a return on their investment from the offload of their repeaters and towers.

Yes, they should give it to us - we would be paying for their backhaul and giving them the power and space for their cell site AND we get to pay them for this?!!!

This encourages them not to build out more sites to try to reach into buildings.

I'd much rather use a repeater, it's less expensive, no recurring fees, and no load on your Internet connection.

After having to put in about $1000 worth of antenna, amplifier, data card, etc. to barely get EVDO (sometimes) (with a 5GB cap at $60/month) (because Verizon doesn't offer DSL in the area and dialup is so noisy and has load coils so that you can't get more than about 21kbps) I'm not inclined to give them this charity.

On top of that their smartphones won't do WiFi and their femtocells won't do EVDO?!!!

The only reason that I see to get this is if I was stuck in a building where I couldn't put in a repeater at all or somewhere in the sticks where there was no reception and I had plenty of Internet bandwidth. Even so, purchasing one of these encourages Verizon not to provide better coverage.

Whoever thought up the idea to charge for this must be giggling constantly about what can be put over on consumers.

There you go drinking the VZW koolaide...

This 'pretty cool new technology' is designed to route your call via YOUR internet link instead of adding to VZW's cellular capacity problems. Wireless bandwidth costs LOTS of $$$ - femtocells (which are not "cells" at all) are cheap alternatives to new cell sites (and the increasing problems with NIMBY's who try to block tower construction).

So, yeah. Femotocell users have the potential of saving VZW (and the others trying the technology) *B*I*G* dollars - they should give users those boxes for free.

Of course, the marketing juggernaughts will spin this like a blender. Since 99.99% of cellualr users are clueless about the technology (like Frink here ) pretty soon they'll be lining up to pay even MORE dollars on top of their outrageous cell bills.

Blah ! to femtocells Boo !

I understand your logic, however if I am able to save money by ditching my land line, or improve my quality of service without an 80ft metal monster every block, by propping up a simple device in a corner of my home, I see that as some decent technology education.
