Is there still a site that provides the software that originally came with the router?
There may be, or someone can share theirs, but honestly you don't even want it. Hyperterminal and tftp (free one from solarwinds) takes care of you.

What about firmware updates? Buying new in the box most likely is sevral revisions behind.
12.2(24a) is the newest version you can run, AFAIK.
If it doesn't have it, it can "be found". Probably even *ahem* by PM'ing various members here.

What's the next best thing to the Cisco 804?
I've only used a netgear and a cisco, and the cisco (once running) beats it hands down. My parents' have one that ran for probably 8 years before lightning took it out. Mine has been going for 4 years and my uncle's has been going for probably 2.

I'm shopping for a Cisco 804 router and have no idea about the problems that may have been encountered.

Ebay has several used and few new ones that seem to have a premium price tag. I know these are obsolete so I'm kinda on my own after the purchase.

1)Is there still a site that provides the software that originally came with the router?

2)What about firmware updates? Buying new in the box most likely is sevral revisions behind.

3) What's the next best thing to the Cisco 804?

Thanks
