[XPPro] Filesharing problems over network - pls help

I'm experiencing some file sharing problems over my home network that I'm at a loss to explain or fix. The files reside on a desktop running XP Professional. The files are mp3s that a laptop on the network accesses so the music can be played in a different room.

Here's the problem: When I add new files to the desktop, using a tagging program called Tag & Rename or a CD ripping program called CDex, I run into problems. The laptop, which also runs XP Pro, is able to see those files, but not fully access them. For instance, if I use the laptop to try to copy a file and paste it to a local drive, I get an error message that says "Cannot copy [name of file] Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not in use."

But here's the strange thing: If I use the desktop machine to make a copy of the file, e.g. Nirvana---Smells Like Teen Spirit.mp3 (the file that can't be copied) becomes Copy of Nirvana---Smells Like Teen Spirit.mp3, the laptop has no difficulty copying the file and pasting it to the local hard drive.

This is really strange behavior. Can someone please help me figure out this problem?

Best,

Dang

At first blush, it sounds like a file permission problem. On the new files is the laptop user listed as having permission on those files?

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me how I'd check to see if the laptop has permission for those files?

Right click on the file. Then choose properties. There should be a security tab. Click on that.

When I use the laptop to right-click on the file, thre is no security tab. The only tabs I have is General and Summary. With the General tab selected, the files aren't listed at Read-only.

However, just for the heck of it, I used the desktop to check permissions and I noticed a difference.

The copy of file, which the laptop is able to access just fine, has 5 users associated with it.

The original of the file, which the laptop *can't* access completely, has only 4.

The files that the laptop can access have a user known as Everyone. The original files don't have this Everyone. (Please see the screenshots above.)

Does this sound like the cause of my problems? If so

Hi dangme,

I'm guessing you're accessing the desktop share from your laptop without having to enter a user/pass (Guest access)?

What are the effective permissions on the shared folder itself? In the security tab for the folder, click Advanced. Is 'Everyone' listed there? If so, is 'Apply to' set to 'This folder, subfolders, and files'?

The other thing I noticed is, your username "Admin1" doesn't seem to be the owner of the original file (Permissions are not "greyed out"). Can you click Advanced > Owner tab and see who it is set as?

Setting permissions for 'Everyone' should fix the problem for now, but I'm not exactly sure on any newly created files. It might have to do with how the software is creating the files, or its access rights (again, not 100% sure on this).

Thanks for the reply, mattwz.

There's no "apply to" option that I can spot. Am I missing something?

Click the Advanced button below the list.

I also noticed in your previous thread that this happened after you reinstalled Windows, which could be the reason why your current username is not set as the owner, and also why old and new file permissions are not matching.

True, I reinstalled Windows recently. But I don't understand why files that are created *after* the reinstallation are having problems. Curiously, all the files that were added to the HD *before* the reinstallation work fine.

Can some kind soul please take pity on me and tell me what I need to do to clear all of this up?

Are your computers set the same i.e. 'Workgroup' or 'Home'? Are you running a software firewall, or router that is set to internet only? Are your computers set to file share under properties?

Yes, all the computers belong to the same workgroup. I am running a software firewall, but have configured them for sharing. And the router is not set to internet only.

Please keep in mind that the computers have no trouble sharing the vast majority of files on the drive. The *only* files that can't be copied and pasted to the local hard drive are those that were created in the last couple weeks using the Tag & Rename application.

Could you check who is listed as owner on the files that are not working? (Security tab > Advanced > Owner tab).

Again, for the files that are not working, try setting permissions for 'Everyone' on those files. That should fix your current problem.

The files that are *not* working do not include Everyone as an owner. The files that do work include Everyone.

So two questions:

1) How do I go about adding this Everyone designation to the all the files that don't work?

2) How do I ensure that all files created using Tag & Rename in the future have this Everyone designation?

Thanks so much.

You're confusing the set file/folder Owner with the actual file/folder permissions. The built-in group 'Everyone' cannot be set as Owner.

1) How do I go about adding this Everyone designation to the all the files that don't work?
1) Goto the Security Tab on your TOP level folder where your music is stored (ie: Music\Artist\Album\Song.mp3, select Music)
2) If 'Everyone' is listed, click Remove followed by Apply. If not, continue to 3
3) Click Add... > Advanced > Find Now > Select 'Everyone' > Click OK > OK > Check Allow for Read and List Folder Contents > OK

Doing this will reapply the permissions to all files/subfolders.

Just make sure you are creating the files within the top level folder (Music) for the correct permissions to be applied. If you are moving files created elsewhere on the drive, the correct permissions will not be inherited.

mattwz, I really appreciate your help. Unfortunately, I've followed your instructions twice and still the files that weren't able to be copied to the networked computer remain that way.

Even *after* I follow those directions, the permissions on the files that can't be accessed remain different from the rest. I've attached screenshots showing the difference.

Interestingly, when I view the permissions after I've removed Everyone (Step 2 in your instructions), the Everyone designation is stripped from every single file in my Music folder. When I follow Step 3, the Everyone designation is added to most files, but not any of the files that I've been having trouble with.

In other words, the technique you suggest seems to work fine with all files except those I've been having trouble with.

dangme See Profile,
Ok, we're almost there. The reason why the permissions weren't applied to those files is because in your 2nd screenshot "Inherit from parent permission entries that apply to child objects" is unchecked. Check those on the files that are not working. After that it should all be working

It would appear I'll have to open each folder, select each file in the folder and then apply the change. When I right click on the containing folder itself the "Inherit from parent permission entries that apply to child objects" box is checked. Am I missing something?

Try the follow:
Goto Start > Run > "cmd" press Enter

In the command prompt, enter the following commands:
cd M:
cacls Music /T /E /G Everyone:R

mattwz, I owe you a huge debt of gratitude! The command worked perfectly.

I still need to figure out why folders that I designate as shared don't automatically work, but I'll leave that for anther time and thread.

Thanks again.
