Swiftel DSL and Vonage in eastern SD

I want to switch from dial-up to high speed internet, and, with what is available to me, the most cost effective plan would be to get DSL (with 2 year contract) from Swiftel, cancel my phone service and get Vonage. Now, the problem with this is that, according to my Dad who has Swiftel's DSL, the connection gets really slow sometimes. I am in the stone age when it comes to technology things, so I don't really have the vocabulary to describe things so well. Just bear with me. I talked to a guy at Vonage who says that the "bandwidth" has to be 90 kilobites per second and this thing called latency has to be 100 or less in order to be able to use the service. If I already had the DSL I could apparently run a "speed test" on it. However, if I get it, I'm stuck with it for two years whether I like it or not. So, I don't really know what to do.
Does anyone have any experience trying to combine Swiftel's apparently less than wonderful DSL with a service like Vonage?

Welcome to DSLR!

I am requesting that a mod might move your post to a more technical-oriented forum to try to get you some better information. This really isn't the most appropriate forum to get the kind of assistance you're looking for. You weren't wrong, but one of the "tech" forums might get your question more exposure.

Vonage does have a bandwidth saver option. This reduces the amount of bandwidth required for a VoIP call. Of course, that is at the expense of voice quality. The lowest setting is pretty much "cell phone quality". The highest setting gives you normal phone quality.

Vonage gives you 30 days to cancel without penalty. So, you do have an out, if the quality is poor on the DSL.

Too bad about the 2 year contract on the DSL ... can't help ya there.

Vonage also has a 2 year contract once you pass the 30 day free trial.

Don't forget to have DSL you need a phone line, unless you get DSL without phone line which could be more money. You should find out if they offer dry or naked DSL before you get Vonage.

Is there anyway you can get highspeed internet through cable instead?
