[Vista] Icon Change Question

I have a computer running Windows Vista Basic. I'm curious how can you change a icon for a file.I would like to change
the icon for a Open Office files I have. But the way you do it seems to be different than XP.

Right click on the present icon, choose Properties... There's a button to change it with.

edit - More icons in %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll

That's how it was in XP. But in Vista Basic, it doesn't give you that option ?

That's been in every OS release that I can remember (except 3.1?), and is still in Win 7. I can't imagine why it would change in Vista Basic...

Vista does not include the "File Types" tab that we are used to seeing in XP and others. There really is no simple way to change an icon associated with a certain file type.

There is an application located at SourceForge called "Types" that will allow you to do this -- »types.sourceforge.net/

Notes:
Although the information page says XP/2000, it will run on Vista (I tried it first ). I chose to "Run as Administrator".

You will have to have Net 2.0 intalled, you can find it here (x86 version) -- Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86)

This question doesn't regard file associations as I read it, it's about alternative icons for a shortcut.

I read the post as "I have files that have a certain icon associated with it and want to change to something else".

To the best of my knowledge, the ability to easily change disappeared in Vista (although it can probably be done if you know where to go in the Registry).

For discussion purposes, how would the OP go about finding the icon associated with the file type?

That would only be valid if it were, say, a *.doc format, and it would have to be a shortcut to do so. I haven't found a way to choose an icon in the registry yet.

You can change the file association to a particular format, i.e. a .tif to open with Photoshop. and it would then show the associated icon if the program were installed.
