| My Motorola HD DVR STB reboots all the time?!
It's bothersome because I use it's ethernet port for my X-Box 360. When it reboots, my game or video stream on the 360 is toast (of course). It started to happen very shortly after I got it, and is getting worse.
This often happens when I am not looking, like asleep or something. If this is a bigger issue then people may not even know it is happening, you would have to check your last BOOT time record, I suppose.
Anyway, any ideas what may be causing this (& all suggestions) appreciated. Thanks! |

| AT&T has rebooted them recently in order to stop the freeview event. Other than that mine have not spontaneously rebooted themselves once in the 6 months or so that I've had service. So something's definitely wrong, I'd call AT&T and try to get them to swap it myself. -- AT&T U-Hearse Your funeral. Delivered.

| One time it would just keep rebooting... I had to unplug it for a bit and then it came back. I suppose I will ask them to send me a new one. Bummer.
Actually, I will wait it out for a bit. These types of things usually get worse, or better, over TIME. The idiom "time will tell" applies. Anyway, there is another idiom that means exactly the opposite of that, hmm, I forget. TTYL |

After talking w/ IT, they strongly discouraged us from taking ethernet from a DVR/STB and plugging it into a PC or any gaming console. Their reason was that it messes up the IP addresses and could eventually lead to the DVR/STB going toast |

1 edit | Hmm. Interesting.
However, it has been working well lately. HD video streams nice and clean from Netflix, and my 360 never has any connection problems that used to plague it when it was WiFi.
Thanks for your input, I am going to keep an eye on it.
UPDATE: Looking good now. I haven't noticed any reboots in some time, and the 360 hasn't had any connectivity problems either (via the STB's ethernet port). |

I mean, my stuff is working fine at the moment... but should I stress about my STB going "toast", as you say?! Perhaps the problems reported by others were just configuration glitches or some early firmware issue (in the STB or the GW) that has since been fixed. Perhaps my box just burst into flames right now. hmm |

1 edit | My HPNA bedroom STB is hooked up to a computer through the ethernet port. This configuration has never caused a problem, but when AT&T sent a firmware update, the box could not complete the update on its own. It hung during the update process. I had to unplug the ethernet conneciton, let it complete, then plug it back in.
That reason alone is enough for AT&T to discourage this officially. I've also read reports that heavy network activity on the attached device can disrupt video on HPNA link, causing picture quality problems. I'm sure AT&T probably doesn't want to deal with people calling and complaining about picture quality problems because the customer has attached a PC that's serving torrents or is infected with viruses. -- AT&T U-Hearse Your funeral. Excellent point; especially this last one. I signed up to a usenet service again, and for the first time in several years just started to check out the binary newsgroups. I really don't like P2P, personally. It may have some discrete purposes, I suppose. I did find the old TV minisieries "The Martian Chronicles" from my childhood via that piratebay tracker, and I don't think I can pay for it to even rent from Netflix or whoever. I doubt I would shell out any real funds for it anyway (I would just as well wait for it to rerun on TV eventually), but it was cool to finally GET IT, and then to discover that it "stared" Rock Hudson! hehe.
I do hate what P2P does to the network. I got a cheap unlimited 5-connection account and quickly setup NewsLeecher and was downloading close to 2mbps, like, immediately. The entire time doing video conferencing without even a hiccup; despite how I am taxing this line, especially with this new usenet traffic. This is a "phat-pipe", and AT&T's network must be in an awesome state right now for this to all be so, sweet.
I humbly proclaim that uVerse rules. |

Especially the part about putting the STB's ethernet port to use! I basically have zero problems with my in-home network now, thanks to AT&T. Getting my 360 OFF WiFi was a big help. TTYL! |

Usenet.net seems pretty good so far. 5 connection streams for $8.99 a month (promo, goes up to $13.99 after two months). I am often downloading at 2mbps with this setup... and no P2P problems! |

| I know that a few large ISPs had dropped all or most of their Usenet service recently (Verizon, Roadrunner, etc.) and had thought that AT&T was in that bunch, but I may be wrong.
Would love to find a ISP that offers decent Usenet access as part of their membership fee, but they're getting harder and harder to find.
I've been paying a dedicated Usenet provider for my newsgroups, and I'm guessing that's how most people will get their Usenet fix in the future. When shopping around for a provider, I thought the following site was helpful...

@rr.com | That's great, and I'm glad the info was helpful! I always hesitate about floating a recommendation, but I found my current provider through them & have had good luck with their site up to this point. |

| reply to mstanzel Thank you for the comments related to the site, we appreciate it. Not sure if it would be of any interest, but we just added a new beta feature that allows folks to customize their Usenet provider comparisons at the site...
»newsadmin.com/comparisontool.asp
You can plug-in whatever criteria is important to you (specific providers, service features, account types, etc.) and we'll generate a quick comparison chart based on those preferences.
The feature is still in the development stages lol, so we're open to any constructive feedback & suggestions for how we can improve upon the tool.
