To the best of my knowledge, the ability to easily change disappeared in Vista (although it can probably be done if you know where to go in the Registry).

kudos:3 | That would only be valid if it were, say, a *.doc format, and it would have to be a shortcut to do so. I haven't found a way to choose an icon in the registry yet.

You can change the file association to a particular format, i.e. a .tif to open with Photoshop. and it would then show the associated icon if the program were installed.
