| only 3mb download on 16/2 plan Pelham,AL
Second day in row , waited till tonight to call Charter hoping was just a temp thing but still same issue
Have been on 16/2 plan for several months now without issue with getting 12-16 down at all times usually
Currently getting good ping times , no packet loss , solid 1800-2mb on upload on all speedtests but all download tests are coming back 3mb
This is directly hooked up with both mac's and pc's , reboot of modem , signal levels all fine etc
Charter tech on phone I talked to checked things on her end and setup troubleticket
Problem is friend who lives few miles away is having exact same issue , trying to get them to see something is up
Tracert's to other diagnostic tools I have show no packet loss , good ping times and so on , just its not getting anywhere close to the download speeds it consistently got before and tests around 3mb every time |

| I'm in the Brook Highlands subdivision (near 280 & 119), and my 16/2 is now showing as 9.8/2 according to speedtest.net.
I tested last night and again this morning (upgraded yesterday from a sb4101 to a sb5101) and it was 13/2 both times.
Don't know if this is related to your issue at all, but it's another data point... |

| reply to PelhamCh_user I'm on the Alabaster/Pelham line here , and like I mentioned before , always got 12-16 consistently with closer to 16
When there have been problems it's been obvious , this though is odd because still getting 2mb up solid , but furthermore zero packetloss , pings just as good , and no drops or problems with signal levels
It one/ten tests will get close to 5mb download tonight but usually right around 3 ,
Hoping they can figure out whats up with the severely reduced download speeds |

| I am in Newnan, Ga and I am getting similar issues. I have 10/1 service and I am getting anywhere from 2.0-6.0 downstream generally hovering at 2.0 and the upload speed is full 1.0 . I called a set up a trouble ticket also, but now at midnight eastern time my speed tests all of a sudden are back to normal. I am betting he comes out Saturday and my speeds are going to be fine. This just started happening last week off and on. I just recently downgraded my service to just basic cable, so they put a filter on my line, but that shouldn't have affected it. |

| reply to PelhamCh_user My trouble call is setup for Thurs afternoon , unfortunately the problem here has been that it has taken me calling and literally throwing a fit to get them to show up
What happens is a problem in the area that has nothing to do with mine gets fixed and they cancel the appt automatically every time without notice
I have yet to ever get a Charter tech out here the first time ,
Last time I had had a problem was last summer and it took 4 , f-ing , 4 cancelled visits before I finally got someone to show up , and the guy who finally did was very helpful and apologetic and agreed it was a moronic system to autocancel all tickets in an area without checking to see if they were related
Anyway the visit isnt going to fix anything but maybe will get the ball rolling , once they see the speeds also and that everything is ok here at my house (hoping friends ticket for exact same issue will raise someone's notice ) |

What speedtest server(s) are you using? -- The comments/views expressed above may not reflect those of my employer, Charter Communications. |

Try speedtest.charter.com or www.speakeasy.net/speedtest.
I would also suggest checking your modem signal levels. |

| reply to pelhamCh_user This morning it's back to 15.8 down , at friends house about 5 miles away 13.6 about half hour ago
Was like this yesterday , sigh this is going to be cute to try and get them to fix
How do we get them to fix it going to to 3mb download sometime after 6pm when it's likely going to be fine during the day when they check it
Paying for 16mb and getting 3 at night isn't going to fly and I'm not in the mood to take off 4 days for all the appts I'm going to have to go through for this it looks like |

| reply to defiant Yes as noted in first post - all signal levels were/are fine - well within spec - Charter phone support said same thing but I had already checked
Charter's test and Speedtest were showing 2- 3 mb downloads at night past couple nights for both me and another friend who lives 4-5 miles away from me
During morning it's fine - it goes to hell at night
Speedtest doesn't vary from showing 13-15mb 100% of the time to 2-3 every time for hours all night long , but like I said Charter's site showed the same
Something at night is absolutely killing the download speeds |

2 edits | reply to PelhamCh_user I'm actually the Tech Sup for the Pelham area...no joke...I'm actually going to go out on a limb and post my desk number. Give me a call and I'll make sure I get my lead tech over there today or tomorrow. Sorry for the hassle, frustration, and confusion on our end. |

| I appreciate it , guy that came out last summer was very knowledgeable and helpful and left me his cell also , unfortunately card got lost since ,
I'll give you a yell later if you'd like , going to try and get home earlier today and see if can beat the speeds dropping and see when they do , guy that works with me is going to do the same
We're both systems engineers that do both server (Exchange/Admin) work and work with Cisco/Extreme/Sonicwall equip daily also so can help get you whatever tests you might want us to run if anything will help on our end -
Can't really come up with much atm because all the tracert's and network tests we did both downloading and testing past two nights showed decent pings and no loss , just simply acting like around 3mb was the cap , no weird spikes on any hops or anything either
My trouble call appt is setup for tomorrow 1-3 but I'll give you yell today and let you know if it tanks again or isnt during the day and when/if it does tonight , |

| Also if it helps any in troubleshooting possible problems , the behavior at night doesn't fluctuate wildly , as in sometimes testing 3mb down , others 6 , others 10 , then back to 3 ,
It acts solid for hours like it's supposed to be 3mb down 2up within a hundred k or so
I've got 6mb DSL with ATT also at my house as both I am my wife work in IT and do lots of remote work and need to be up at all times or its a drive at night on site , so its worth it , and Charter usually has better routing and ping times I've noticed it - so I tested downloading some files also on the DSL last night from the same sites and was getting 500-575k while on the cable around 290 whereas it's usually 1100-1200 - again not fluctuating , acting solidly like it had a 3mb cap
Just in case any of that helps point to anything |

| reply to PelhamCh_user I wonder if this could be a problem affecting more of Alabama and not just the Pelham area? For the past 2 weeks at night from about 6pm to 11:30pm my download speeds drop below 1meg (5M/12k plan) and I see a lot of retransmitted packets and packet loss on the NDT Web 100 test sites - in the Statistics. Here an example.
8:09pm Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility TCP/Web100 Network Diagnostic Tool v5.2.0f running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 433.67Kb/s running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 478.90kb/s Information: throughput is limited by other network traffic. Web100 reports the Round trip time = 103.13 msec; the Packet size = 1380 Bytes; and There were 28 packets retransmitted, 69 duplicate acks received, and 77 SACK blocks received The connection stalled 2 times due to packet loss |

I would also suggest checking your modem signal levels. Just tried with all three and they're close enough not to make much difference, right now I'm getting 15/1.8 (the best I've ever had). Modem signal levels are all within 'normal' range and haven't varied a significant degree since changing modems. |

| reply to PelhamCh_user PBarrow that definitely would be in the timeframe I have had the issues - 6pm to about midnite - same at friends house in Chelsea who is really only a few miles behind me as far as a straight line
RocketJeff now that you mention it , my test this morning before I left was the best I had had also overall - usually is low 15 and it was right under 16 and the ping time was 12ms
I'm going to try and get home early and see when/if it drops off and if so if it's a gradual 15-10-8-5-3 kind of thing or a fairly dramatic and immediate from 15-3
My night test ping times to speedtest.net and other game and network servers I run offsite are usually in the 30-35ms range which I expect and is fine and that still is true at night but the download is what goes
I did an upload test or two and the files seemed to transfer up without issue at the usual 2mb speed |

Will let you know what speeds look like when I get home and then later this evening , |

| reply to jhbinal Well problems back , just walked in door and as of 3:15 pm I get 1.8-2 on upload everytime and out of 4 tests at speedtest.net and charter's speed test I get 2.8 to 4 at best down
Ping times and tracerts seem decent but definitely not as good as this morning but the download speed has gone to hell again - signals on modem within spec and same as before
Just suddenly 15.8 down has gone to 3 again
Never did hear from tech btw but am home now and will be tomorrow after 12 |
