Cingular was a joint venture between SBC and Bellsouth. In 1994 AT&T bought McCaw Cellular, and renamed it as, "AT&T Wireless Services, Inc."
In 2004, AT&T Wireless Services, Inc. was merged with Cingular Wireless, the SBC-Bellsouth joint venture. So I was off by a click (as in 1/4 inch of angular change at 100 meters from the bench rest).

AT&T didn't "kill off" AT&T Wireless, they just bought Bellsouth, and brought all of Cingular under one brand.
