1 edit | [southeast] New IP Block - 173.65.xxx.xxx?
For months, my assigned IP block was 72.64.xxx.xxx. Then, yesterday, my line monitor shows a huge outage lasting for hours. I was not home so I didn't actually experience the outage.
This morning when I came to DSLR, it asked me to identify my ISP! What the... So I looked at DeeEnEs and saw that it had updated DSLR with my new IP - 173.65.xxx.xxx at 14:03 EST on 01/20/2009.
Is this a new Verizon block? It seems to be since DSLR didn't recognize it and I had to identify it as belonging to Verizon.net FiOS. Anybody else on it? |

| Does it make a single difference what "IP" you have?
It should not unless something they did with routing is incorrect. If not, this should not be a complaint.

| In the short time I've been on it, I've only noticed a slight drop in speed and increase in Ping time. I have the 10/2Mbps service.
BEFORE, on block 72.64.x.x
AFTER, on block 173.65.x.x |

There have been quite a few threads about these new blocks (I think the other was the 98/8 block), but as these sites are found and notified, the impact lessens. -- He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have. -Socrates |

1 edit | Gary- The reason for the change?
VZ is migrating all internet users over to a new version of Juniper routers - which come with new Gateway IP's and new blocks of addresses.
Apparently, the new routers do not account for a download "pad", as you're now seeing on your speed test.
I was recently migrated myself about a month or so ago - actually had a new Gateway IP for the first time since I got FIOS internet in May 2006.
Here, I always used to see about 20500/4500 up, now i'm consistently 19500 / 4500. -- "ONE team - ONE city - ONE dream!!" |

Juniper routers, or at least the way Verizon implements them, suck. They have nothing but problems with them over on the DSL side. They have to lower their RWINs from 65535 to 13068 to get their speeds to behave. Are they designated with ERX in the router code, on tracerts/LQ tests I guess, like on DSL. They are using a newer version here. |

| ERX routers are Juniper routers. Right now I'm on a 1.5Mbps DSL connection (that same connection at the place I manage it for) and they are on a Juniper. I actually had to set the RWIN at 22500 to make things work at top speed to any server on their PCs. |

JohnA Premium join:2003-09-16 Pittsburgh, PA | Don't know. They say the speeds bounce all over with higher RWIN, on the DSL side. With standard RWIN they get higher tests to the west coast than local. |

| That's fine and dandy for 1.5 Mbps DSL, but if that starts happening on FiOS, that will suck. Lower RWIN will mean you'll never max out a 20Mbps connection unless you're VERY close to it.
I hope they fix this before they become prevalent in FiOS areas. -- He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have. -Socrates |

| Well, either I didn't do it right or I just came back up with almost the same block. Now I'm on 173.78.x.x.
My speed test result is still below the 10.3Mbps it used to be and speedtest.net thinks I'm 1100 miles from Tampa and the ping has gone from ~90ms to over 100ms. I am 20 miles from downtown Tampa. This sucks! |

I can not find it, but a LOT of people verified the same thing from a while back about losing the 1megabit.
I myself had 20700 down, now its only 19700. |

Its just a hard pill to swallow seeing my download speed suddenly drop from an average of 10.3Mbps (SINCE THE SERVICE WAS INSTALLED IN SEPT 2007 ) to 9.8Mbps and hearing there is nothing I can do about it, that it is within "accecptable" limits. |

2 edits | Gary, I agree with you. I even emailed my "trump card" with Verizon and he stated there was nothing I could do.
I told him though, back in the day, if we lost a full meg off of our 1.5 package, we'd be extremely angry and crawling along!
At least you've only lost a half a meg. -- "ONE team - ONE city - ONE dream!!" |
