Re: hd updates for the Reading, Pa area

I live in the Lower Alsace Area, which isn't too bad either. I would love see the St. Lawrence VZ building turned into a Fios Hub and see that serve Exeter, Lower Alscace, Mount Penn, down to Amity / Douglassville.

The issue I see with Amity / Douglassville is while they are affluent homes, they are D&E Communications territory. I'm not sure if Verizon has any ability to build out in another territory like that.

Because of the situation in Reading, I would of thought Comcast would go all digital sooner. Why? To cut back on all the theft! There are numerous lock boxes that are unlocked or illegal splitters hooked up. If there's no analog to steal it's not worth tapping into other peoples lines. Give out 2 or 3 free DTA's with each subscription or full fledged boxes if they want and call it a day. Boom, theft solved, bandwidth crisis adverted.

It would seem that the City of Reading would be the LAST place in BerksCo that FiOs would want to go into.
That may be,but politically there is no way Verizon can have a coverage map that looks like a doughnut with Reading as the hole. It's all moot anyway I just don't see Verizon expending any resources on Berks county Fios anytime soon.Their attention is now focused on the Philadelphia Fios build out.

The short answer is no pull in Washington or Harrisburg. The county has been so gerrymandered that we have 3 different congressional districts,4 state senate districts and 9 state house districts.Berks county has been carved up for the benefit of others

Well then if were never going to see Fios, they should stop running the commercials for it. That's such a tease!

Berks County sucks. Plain and simple haha. I'm in Sinking Spring, and there is no talks of Fios. There will be no Fios here for a long time. 1. It's taking them years to get Franchise agreements even in larger cities. 2. There is too small of a demographic, and because of that Comcast and other local cable companies don't need to put a rush on things when theres no direct competition. And no, Direct TV isn't even close to competition.

Verizion ran fiber right through the middle of Harrisburg, but it's only active on the east side outskirts. They just got the agreement in Philadelphia, and it will still be two years before its everywhere in there.

I spoke to Comcast today about my bill, and he told me that we would get three new HD channels on 2/26. We will see!

Best case scenario:
217 HISTORY HD
221 CNN HD
238 AMC HD

Worst:
189 QVC HD
209 CNBS "HD" (Not HD)
237 Weather HD

2/26 is about the one year anniversary of our last major HD additions. Yeah we got some channels here and there since than, but Feb 2008 we got like 8 all at once.

There's no room, so if that's true they would have to remux some channels. They could get us History and Animal Planet in HD if they change our HD Theater mux around, but I don't know what third channel they would do.

ckdk1, are you just guessing or have you heard something?

ComcastTech, I agree Berks County is in the stone age. Next time I move I'll be sure I have a place to put a dish, or move into Service Electric's territory.

There's no shot of FiOS anytime soon in Berks County. I know a few people who work in different levels at Verizon, and there are absolutely no plans whatsoever for Berks County. Not even on the radar. In fact, when FiOS originally came out (TV that is), I asked about when we would be getting it here in Berks and my friend said "Never, they have no interest in doing that in Berks County." Checked with him a few weeks ago when Philly got the distribution deal. Same answer. Zero discussion of it ever coming here.

Well then Verizon is just as bad as Comcast then. So Verizon wants to loose out on an opportunity for more customers and more talk and praise of their service. They are technologically advanced, but in reality that means nothing if you only cover 5% of the country.

So Verizon, F you. You just lost out on a very high tier customer who subscribes in over $200 worth of services. Continue to send those 1mbps DSL ads and they will continue to find their way into my shredder.

Comcast is no better. F you Comcast. The second I get a chance to move, you better be certain a dish is going to be put up. If you can't keep up, then move along now. You gotta pay to play!

Total guess/speculation/hope, channel numbers are based on neighboring systems and open channel numbers in the Reading system, since they seem to keep the channel numbers pretty much the same from Philly to HBG. Comcast will probably give us more crap which they carry under some BS contract to favor one content provider, i.e. the FX/FNC/Speed addition.

I would think maybe we will get the History and Animal Planet channels as Cypher said. Maybe they will make that into a new 3-channel mix.

Are any systems serviced out of the Lebanon head end distributing DTA's? That would seem to signal that analog to digital migration is at least on the radar and there is hope for enhancements.Otherwise I just don't think we have any chance for service upgrades in Reading

Comcast earnings come out tomorrow (2/18) it will be real interesting to see the subscriber numbers

DTA's could solve our bandwidth problems. Maybe we all should call about them. If people in Central PA get an idea that DTA's exist and are available, maybe they would think about deploying them?

Seriously I'd love to grab one of those guys by the arms and drag them over to the Philly burbs and say, "See, this is what a DTA is and what benefits it would bring!" Someone needs to seriously educate them that there are solutions out there. Heck maybe the DTAs are backordered. That doesn't mean there aren't any other solutions in the tool box! There's 15:1 SD Compression rates, 1 GHz RF expansion, SDV Technology, etc... Seriously they need to open a CED Magazine from time to time. Hopefully someone from our area heads to this year's Cable Show 09' and gets some good ideas.

This past weekend I was up in the pocono region in the middle of nowhere. The biggest city that operator served is Stroudsburg. They have 51 HD channels and nice SA gear with the quick passport guide. Kind of a shame when east bumblef*%$! has better technology than we do.

Yeah well thats life. We just got 3 new DVR's today, the Motorola DCX 3400. When everything is decoded and downloaded to the boxes in the next couple weeks, I'm gonna test one. They are already installed in the headend.

Motorola DCX 3400

Still with the 160 GB standard,250 GB optional hard drives. The incremental cost for a 500GB drive is almost nothing.

Keep me updated on the DCX 3400, like when they are available and how you like them.

I'm curious if the guide is different. They are supposidly Tru2Way, and the Panasonic Tru2Way I-Guide looks updated, like more modernized graphics, although still the same layout.

I'm curious what the HD size is and if you can upgrade the HD with a USB 2.0 or eSATA hard drive yet. Additionally if there are any other features like MR-DVR, Remote DVR Scheduling, and native resolution pass through.

Here is the user manual

It has 2 USB ports,a Firewire port and a eSATA port for an external hard drive but it is "dependent on application support"

That's because it's Blue Ridge Cable. My brother lived up there and not only is their cable better than Comcast they are also cheaper. The last I heard to have the exact same thing that I have as far as TV was $30 cheaper with Blue Ridge and too think they're a small cable company. Their HSI was with Penn Tele Data. I'm not sure if that is all the same now or not. My brother moved from there to IL three years ago.
