 | reply to lstevens Just called to cancel effective immediately. No early termination fee, they're crediting my card for the partial month, and you have a choice-- keep the adapter, or they'll send a box for you to mail it back to them. Hmmm, decisions, decisions..... I'll take door #1, Monty. |

2 edits | I just got the letter as well. Who runs Voicewing for VZ? I thought they just used some other provider.
What happens to my $15 that they have for international calling?
They sent out a real classless letter. I guess they had to disguise the fact that they were really saying get lost, up yours, have a nice day, don't let the door hit you on the way out. |

For those who have studied both the Standard Oil breakup of 1911, and the Bell System breakup of 1984, Verizon corresponds to Exxon.
I'll write about that more at length sometime.
But the corporate cultures are parallel. |
|
 | Verizon corresponds to Exxon.
PX I'm intrigued on what your saying....do you mean another Telco breakup?? |

1 edit | No, I'm referring to the parallels between the Standard Oil breakup of 1911, and the Bell System breakup of 1984.
The US Government forced the breakup of Standard Oil in 1911. It's hard for us today to imagine how the companies under the Standard Oil trust (started by John D. Rockefeller) so dominated America.
The breakup resembles the 1984 Bell System breakup because regional companies (Baby Standards, like Baby Bells) were created.
Hence, Standard Oil of New Jersey (S.O. thus: Esso) which after many changes became Exxon. Standard Oil Company of New York (SOCONY) which became Mobil. Indiana Standard evolved into Amoco/American. And so forth.
The "Baby Standards" kept merging and merging. Just as the Baby Bells merged back as well into Verizon and a reborn AT&T.
When Exxon and Mobil merged, it was a combining of the New Jersey and New York franchises from the former Standard Oil.
When Bell Atlantic and NYNEX merged to form Verizon, it was a combining of the New Jersey and New York franchises from the former Bell System.
Yes, folks, I know that's greatly simplified.

 | reply to bgraham said by bgraham:My letter says they don't want the adapter back. Which makes it nice landfill material unless they will tell us how to unlock them. I've spent the evening shopping for replacement services and babyTEL tells me I can use the PAP2 ATA as long as it is unlocked -- which, at the moment, it is not... |

 | reply to lstevens I'll be interested in hearing what you guys do for an alternate source. We've been using Voicewing for a few years and were happy with the service. We don't use a "landline" much anymore but it's nice to give that number to companies and businesses so I'm not bothered on my cell.
I'd really like to hear if there's a way to adapt the PAP2 to Skype or something.

If they pushed a password like a PIN to all users ... otherwise they likely won't want to pay support to handle each instance to unlock the device.
Vonage eventually allowed (for a fee) the Cisco ATA 186 to be unlocked. (I see Vonage has their own ATA product, and a USB product only now!) --

If it's easily unlockable, I wouldn't mind buying devices in good condition to pass on to our customers from folks who don't want/need their device anymore. |

| reply to Stryker412 I thought I was the only person here using Voicewing. I chose it about 2 or 3 years ago, thinking that all the others would come and go but VZ would be there forever. Boy, was I wrong. . I have not looked around much at other providers and I must say that Voicewing has been flawless since I have used it. My only complaint is that you cannot turn off their answering service. It was not needed by us and my own answer machine beeps if I have a message, I don't have to keep picking up the phone to find out if I have a message.
I did have then turn down the volume on one line, the volume was so loud a regular phone sounded like a speaker phone.
I might try VOIPo on one line next week as a trial. They seem to get good reviews. If it works I will save some money over VZ anyway. |

I have a few mornings off next week and I have a spare PAP2 from Voicewing so i will mess with it. I don't care if I brick it either. |
