Re: What the heck is going on in SoCal? - Part 2

said by lordpuffer:

I spoke with a Tier 3 Tech last night and he told me that they were having problems with the Santa Monica server (which affects the whole west side of LA) and were working on it....He also told me that all problems and higher speeds that should be constant will probably happen by mid-year, still due to the Adelphia switch-over in Socal. This guy knew his stuff and I believe was being totally honest with me.
This is good info, but what he didn't tell you is that they've been having serious problems with the west side of LA for more than a year, and don't have the corporate will (or talent) to fix it. That's why so many of us are going with FIOS now that it's available in SM and Venice.

I'm sitting here tonight with latency that nearly renders my connection unusable.

If I had FIOS in West Hollywood, I would switch to them today.....I don't have the latency problem in WEHO.....But have been having problems most days for the past year like you. The guy I spoke to wasn't Corporate though, so I was just going by my gut feeling that he was telling me what he knew.

Not too bad for this time of day, I guess. Had been avg. 12700 down, Orange Co. area.

Connection seems to be dropping, I can't figure out why.
I've tried power cycling and everything else but when I try to load a web page it doesn't load up and I have to hit refresh multiple times to get some of the pages to work. Tried speedtest, which starts off fine and then the speed drops down quickly and get this error "test returned an error while trying to download file".

Anyone else getting something like this, or is it on my end?

Same here - I am also getting a small broken image gif when trying to view my modem's status page at 192.168.100.1

I wouldn't say your speeds are "just horrible." It's not a speed issue; it's more of a "path" issue. The problem is the Time Warner network here in LA. Their routers are poorly managed (some would say totally UNmanaged.) As I type this, one of their LA interconnects (to Level 3) is dropping ALL packets. It's as if a six year old is in charge over there.

Do you have a trace that shows the dropping of packets?

*A* trace? See my other posts.... I have dozens and dozens and dozens, saved up over the past eighteen months. I've sent many of them in to Time Warner's LA Ops Center, just for the sake of enjoying the entertainment of their replies.

Their replies, you ask? Yes - they occasionally reply to tell me to call their tech support number, so some moron can tell me to clear my browser cache.

I meant a trace we would see, specifically one showing packet loss at: "one of their LA interconnects (to Level 3) is dropping ALL packets."?

Thanks,

Kip

Something is loading down your connection. Were you running an application such as file sharing at the time you did the test? If you were, close it down and rerun the check. If you weren't then it is likely that your machine is infected with malware.

this is the problem, try doing some online gaming while this is goign on. Cause you can't unless you like to warp. this all on a server on the west coast.

While WHAT is going on?

Packet loss in the middle of a trace is not a problem, ESPECIALLY when hops on either side of that loss show NONE.

A normal trace from your PC would be better.
