The only way that faster speeds help is if:
1. You have more than a few computers surfing at the same time.
2. You surf a web site that can actually serve content at 16Mbs.
3. You use P2P. |

I use P2P quite often but not enough where extra speed is going to make a big difference.
As for streaming HD video or backing up, the site on the other end needs to be able to accommodate the speed at their end. |

The internet isn't being served by webservers under someone's desk connected to a T1. Today's internet has tons of bandwidth, load distribution and redundancy. |

CNDs help to distribute content to many people simultaneously. Not really to improve your specific speed. |
