 | Verizon PRL & Alltel Since Alltel & Verizon have "merged" or whatever (I'm an Alltel customer), and Verizon has a newer PRL out, I figured I'd give it a try (51143)...I have my card locked to the EVDO signal, so generally I can't use Verizon signals at all....but on QLM it showed up where I was getting a Rev A signal on a Verizon tower. Excitedly, I clicked connect, however, it prompts me that the username/password are invalid on the domain...I put in custom credentials through QLM and put in phonenumber@alltel.net/alltel for username and password, but still no luck. I was curious if there was some way we could use the Verizon towers or not, if anyone had been able to get on, and what the workaround is for it? I only ask because the tower/signal I currently use is torture and I'd love to be able to get on to that one instead. Thanks!
Also, sorry in advance for all the technicalities I butchered above, I'm not horribly tech savvy just trying to get decent internet |

 | I finally got the Verizon prl to work with Alltel's QLM using our um150al. I had to get the latest verizon prl which is 51248. I also had to switch from mobile ip off to preferred for it to work. I could use an antenna here as I am only getting 2-3 bars signal.
Speedtest for proof:

Check out that ping!!!
Hope it sticks around! |

 | reply to BioRiot Nice, I got it working too! Thanks so much! |

 | reply to BioRiot I found out you don't even need the latest prl, the ones off of corolada.com will work fine. But I did email them the latest file to update it. |

I've got an Alltel (RevO)tower 4 miles from my house, and with my card in my attic I am pulling 74% signal and -67db. My Verizon tower is probably 10 miles away, but it's an rA tower.
I've got the UM175 card.
Question is, what did you guys all have to change to lock onto the Verizon tower? My card roams and connects to Sprint rA when I am work, is there a chance I can point my grid at the Verizon tower and lock that without making PRL changes? |
|
1 edit | reply to BioRiot I can get mine to connect to the Verizon tower and show RA when its connecting but a few seconds after it connects it immediately drops to 1x. I think the 1x signal me be too strong near me, I might have to get an antenna or booster to help pull it in. I get Alltel DO fine though, well until recently when its all gone to crap, with dropped packets and not finishing downloads and going from 800kb down to 0kb and not moving! and then going dormant. Any ideas? I'm using the Huawei ec228 also |

 | reply to BioRiot I also use alltel's unlimeted plan and have the 51248 PRL,I just wanted to know if I was going to be charged if I changed PRLs |

MarthaG join:2007-10-28 Kimbolton, OH | reply to MarthaG I've been enjoying Rev A. Now if I could get a bug in flash player fixed I'd be ready to go. This time it has noting to do with my connection luckily.

 | reply to BioRiot My connection is nuts.
I'm showing 100% signal strength at rA, yet here are my times:

I've been switching between EVDO and rA all day. I downloaded and am using PRL 40047. Verizon is doing a lot of work here and there's considerable Alltel/VZW overlap on my street. I wish they'd get this stabilized! |
|
 | reply to BioRiot Almost sounds to me like you have a bad card. You aren't getting rA speeds, but you all ready know that. I would try the Verizon prl and see what that does for you. |
|
 | I haven't been able to find a place to download it. I've found it in the .rla (?) format but not PRL. |
|
 | reply to BioRiot Just rename the file xxxxx.prl when you go to activate it. |
|
 | Thank you, Pioneer. I downloaded and activated 51248...yuck. The signal comes in and it locks, but with an RSSI of -98 I may need an antenna. The signal wavers a lot and downloading pages is slower than EVDO.
I've tried several different PRL's now and the most stable one seems to be 40047. The pings on all of them are terrible!
40047 (EVDO, RSSI -80dBm, 100% signal strength):

51248 (Rev A, RSSI -98dBm, 57% signal strength):

40045 (EVDO, RSSI -83dBm, 100% signal strength):

...and the last one is 51124 (Rev A, RSSI -96dBm, signal 54%):

With the 215+ ping times I can't run a lot of real-time applications. They just time out, give me errors or don't work, period. I know jack about antennas and think I'm doing well considering 1) we're in the sicks and 2) our house has a steel frame, but I wonder if an antenna would make a big difference? Would it improve ping times?
I'm still waiting word on my service ticket. |

 | reply to BioRiot Anyone know of a good PRL to try around the area code 27882 (Spring Hope, NC) I know how to change them and where to get them but not really sure which ones would be better in my area. -- Vista Ultimate 64bit, 8gb G.Skill DDR2 800mhz, Phenom II 940 X4, 2x Diamond HD3870 512mb DDR4 PCIe2.0 (xfire), 700w PSU, 500gb(32mb) HDD, Antec 900 Gaming Case |

 | reply to BioRiot To Pioneer56,
Hi Pioneer56,
I also live aorund the Cadillac area and would like to discuss experiences with you regarding Alltel rA in our area. Mine has been spotty. However, when I forced a Verizon PRL into my EC228 modem I get decent speeds and ping. Please advise as to your billing experiences with Alltel when you use a Verizon PRL. I am cautious on this issue and have had mixed answers on this both from Alltel and Verizon techs. Dont know if email posting is allowed on these forums but will be glad to post one if you ask. |

 | reply to BioRiot Hi Sailboattrip,
I am in Harrison, MI, only about 40 min. from you. I, too, am having very slow download speeds, supposedly on RevA, in my area. Sometimes, the connection seems better than before (on EVDO) but certainly not the speeds one would think you should get on RevA. Last night and early this morning the speeds were terrible! Sure wish I knew what was going on... Mary |

No Alltel/Verizon roaming on Sprint towers After sticking my head in a bucket of ice water following my first conversation with Alltel last night, I called them back and learned something VERY interesting from a senior technician.
Alltel USED to have an agreement for data roaming on Sprint's towers. That came to an end a couple of months ago when some of us starting seeing our speed times deteriorate. I don't know the reasons for it (and neither did the Alltel tech) and I'm only guessing it's a national decision, but the contract allowing Alltel subscribers to roam on Sprint towers is kaput.
The EVDO Sprint tower I was apparently hitting off was closer than the RevA Alltel tower I'm using now. My current RSSI is -75 and during the day it's not terrible but at night...Lord have mercy.
The technician (who was extremely helpful and gave me some good pointers as well as answers and a friendly ear to bend), didn't know whether or not 1) Verizon has a roaming agreement with Spring, or 2) if I'm patient I'll eventually be able to use the Sprint tower after the merger is finished. She said that the technical merger should be complete by July/August and Alltel as we know it will cease to exist.
She also let me know that an amp would probably make a big difference in download/upload by stabilizing the signal. Her recommendation was the Cyfre they *used* to sell, and I'm looking into getting one.
Apparently Alltel and Verizon aren't expecting questions like mine but Alltel did their best to help and again offered to let me out of my contract for free.
My best advice: find the location of your nearest Sprint and Alltel towers. I'm 3.5 miles from the Alltel and 3 from Sprint's, and it was just enough to make a difference. |

Re: Verizon PRL & Alltel Hi Mnesset,
Yes, I know Harrison. What I do wish someone would answer is the billing experience if you have an Alltel contract and force Verizon rA by using a verizon PRL. So many have talked about how to do this (which I can), but no one is discussing if billing has changed. One of the forum said they had been doing since Jan 09. For whatever reason Verizon rA is much better than Alltel rA. I will be kind of glad when all is merged. |
|
 | reply to BioRiot Did you get my pm I sent to you Sailboattrip? Nothing in the the billing has changed. In fact I am not even using Alltel's software anymore, I switched to Verizon's with no problem now for 2 months. |
