threaten to cancel

When I switched from DTV to FiOS TV, and called DTV to cancel, they offered me a year service for $30/mo. (Was paying $56). Said no thanks. Then I got a letter in the mail with the same offer.

Just threaten to cancel, and if you have a legitimate alternative, perhaps you will get a break.

It is great that you got offered a good deal but the fact is you do not have to threaten to cancel. You can also try just explaining that you can not afford your service and maybe they can offer you something to help you out. Perhaps consider picking a less expensive package or taking off a premium package you do not watch anyway.

The threaten to cancel approach is not going to work if you do not have a good payment history or are under a programming commitment. Have to be careful because you might just get what you asked for.

I tried explaining to DTV twice before cancelling and they said there wasn't anything they could do about lowering my cost (unless I wanted to give up a reciever or two). I told them I was tired of paying $35/month before I turned on the TV (3x$5 for rec, $10 for HD, $5 for Prem HD, $5 DVR). Sorry we can't do anything. I cancelled and within 24 hours they called saying they would credit my account $200 for the remainder of my contract (10 months) if I turned the service back on. Told them no, and they called again with 48 hours trying to sweeten the deal with a $23/month credit for a year. I was under a programming commitment and told them I'll pay the $100 cancel fee because I'll save that much in switching to full service HD cable in two months that doesn't drop off whenever there is fog or severe weather. Oh and I got two DVRs and free service for the other two TVs w/o a monthly charge for a box that I had to pay DirecTV in advance for.
