 | charter 20 meg release dates Does anyone know when Charter will roll out 20 meg service. I was talking to a rep that stated if you are on 16meg already you will be automatically upgraded to 20 at no additional cost. BTW I'm located in Hoover al it would be nice if a tech could commit on this |

 | reply to watts3000 One thing I'd like to know, is this: will the 20mb tier replace the 16mb tier in all systems, or only in the areas they are rolling out the 60meg tier? |
 | reply to watts3000 I just answered my own question. I called and spoke with a (surprisingly) helpful charter rep, and while he didn't know off-hand, he browsed through some of their information documents and found one saying that February 28th, all current 16mb accounts will be upgraded 20mb automatically. No change in price, just freeing up a little more bandwidth for us. He said that if I'm not seeing 20mb speeds by the first few days of march to call back and i guess they'll push it through manually or something. |

| reply to watts3000 This is good news, hoping this is true for Michigan too.
Now that we know those of us at 16 megs will get this, how can we tell? The speed page on my Ambit has been at zero/zero for a few weeks now. So I can't actually tell the precise speeds configured any longer. Speed tests, even inside Charter's network using their speed test servers are still not always reliable.
So interested in the best way to know when and if we are upgraded to the new 20 meg tier. |
 | reply to watts3000 for me, I have had really reliable results from www.speedtest.net. I always get around 15.5mb/s down 1800 up. I will know when it's at 20 because the speedtest will *probably* show something higher than 16mbps...I know in the almost-year I've had 16mbps I've never broken that threshold on a test. with any luck, I'll be testing around 19mb/s or more.
If you don't have a reliable speedtest to use, you can see if downloading from a fast server helps...maybe try to download a service pack from microsoft.com or something...if you're able to max out your connection, on a 16mb/s connection you should see 1.8MB/s to 2MB/s download speeds, on a 20mb/s connection I would guess you should be able to get around 2.4MB/s to 2.5MB/s. |

 | Curious to know what all routers do you guys use I use a Linksys WRT54GL running DDWRT v24 myself. I wonder it what point will we need to start changing out routers due to the fact that it can't keep up anymore. Actually I think if I my area ever sees the 60 meg I most likely will cut over to a box running pfsense or monowall. Than again I need to see what the WRT54GL will max out at |
 | most routers can handle 100megs. the modem you might need a new one. not sure if the 20 meg will be docsis 2 or docsis 3? anyone know, cause i pretty sure charter hasn't updated all areas to docsis 3 yet, then again maybe i'm wrong? |
 | the 20mb isn't docsis3....and I'm not sure charter ever took the time to upgrade to docsis 2...I think it's probably 1.1, actually. That's why the 20mb will roll out everywhere the 16mb already exists, but the 60mb is only in certain test markets. |
 | reply to watts3000 does the 10 meg service automatically get upgraded to 16 meg? |
 | No I think not, they are removing the 16 meg service if I understand correct. |

 | Well then you will see 20 instead of 16 when they finally hit your area. Because the 16mbit will be no more. |

 | Well I dunno, how big is your city? 4,000 or so? My city has a bit over double and it took a bit to get here, being as you have less people, I would say by the end of the year at the latest, but do not quote me on that. |
 | reply to watts3000 "Initially, the new Charter service will be available only in Town and Country, Manchester, Chesterfield, Ballwin and some surrounding areas. The company isn't saying when it will spread to other parts of St. Louis or into other markets. The company also is bumping its previous top tier offering to 20 Mbps from 16 Mbps in a month or so."

It is in my back yard and front yard and neighbors. Waiting when it is 100% up and running. Again, was quoted $114.99 for 60/5. |

right now im getting 900kb/s from giganews using 2,4,8,12,20 threads.. whatever, i've tried it all.. their network has been pretty crappy lately towards the nights, it used to be decent. at least those nights of goriffic lag are gone, yes. GORRIFIC! |

Not any smaller than Parsons which in an even more rual area and they've also had VOD for years something we still don't have. |

actually it's normally faster than above around the 14 to 15 range. I'm over off of rocky ridge where are you located. I actually was having a speed problem back when I had the 10 meg however it was a line problem Charter came out and ran a new line after that it was all good |
